Did you know that there are three different types of marriage certificates in South Africa? The Department of Home Affairs offers three options, each containing different levels of detail. Much like birth certificates, the type you choose can make a big difference—especially if you’re conducting genealogy research or need official documentation.

The three types of marriage certificates are:

  1. Abridged Marriage Certificate
  2. Unabridged Marriage Certificate
  3. Vault Copy

Abridged Marriage Certificate

Abridged Marriage Certificate.webpThe abridged marriage certificate is the most basic version available. It provides only essential details about the marriage and the individuals involved.

Information included:

  • Husband’s ID Number
  • Husband’s Names and Surname
  • Husband’s Date of Birth
  • Wife’s ID Number
  • Wife’s Names and Surname
  • Wife’s Date of Birth
  • Date of Marriage
  • Place of Marriage
  • Type of Marriage

This certificate is generally suitable for everyday administrative purposes but offers limited insight for deeper research.

Unabridged Marriage Certificate

Unabridged Marriage Certificate.webpThe unabridged marriage certificate is more detailed and provides additional context about both spouses and the marriage itself.

Information included:

  • Husband’s ID Number
  • Husband’s Names and Surname
  • Husband’s Marital Status
  • Husband’s Date and Country of Birth
  • Wife’s Maiden Name and Present Surname
  • Wife’s Names
  • Wife’s Marital Status
  • Wife’s Date and Country of Birth
  • Marriage Date and Place
  • Type of Marriage
  • Marriage Officer’s Designation Number
  • Date the Marriage was Solemnized
  • Name of the Marriage Officer
  • Denomination
  • Endorsements

This version is often required for legal, immigration, or official matters and provides more useful information for family research.

Vault Copy

The vault copy is the most complete version of a marriage record. It is the original Marriage Register form used to officially record the marriage on the population register.

Typically completed by the marriage officer and signed by all parties, this document is often handwritten and preserved as an official record.

Key points about the vault copy:

  • It is the original registration document
  • Usually includes signatures of the couple and witnesses
  • Earlier records (pre-1950s) may contain limited information
  • Later records (from the late 1950s onward) often include significantly more detail, including identification numbers

Applying for a Marriage Certificate

Outside South Africa

If you are living abroad, you can apply through your nearest South African embassy or consulate. While document ordering services are available, they can be costly, so it’s worth comparing options.

Inside South Africa

Applications can be made at any branch of the Department of Home Affairs. Be sure to select the correct certificate type when submitting your application.

Applying for a Divorce Decree

It’s important to note that divorce records are not handled by Home Affairs. To obtain a divorce decree, you must apply at the court where the divorce was finalized. The Department of Home Affairs does not issue any divorce-related documents.
