Sale 17 and 18 May 1830
Inventory of all such property as has been relinquished by the death of
Carel Wilhelm Ludwich Schnaar on the fourteenth day of the month of April in
the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty
The deceased having by his last will and testament executed jointly with
his wife Anna Catharina Pfluger on the 7:th instant before the Notary Public Mr
Jacobus Petrus de Wet and certain witnesses appointed to be his sole and
universal heirs, viz:t:
and has further requested and appointed the Board of Orphan Masters of
this Colony to be, and to act as executors and guardians over the minor heirs
in said will. In consequence whereof the undersigned commissioned Members of
the Orphan Board have taken the joint estate under proper inventory, and found
the same to consist in the following, viz:t
In the firstmentioned house
It being the mutual desire of the testator and his surv:g widow as
expressed in their last will that the above named slaves belonging to their
joint estate shall not be sold, provided they conduct themselves properly; but
that they shall remain with the survivor, for the use of herself and children
until the children shall have attained their majority, marry, or reach some
other approved state, when the said slaves shall be devided amongst them
Memorandum
On searching the papers of the joint estate some documents were handed
over by Johan Christiaan Hauff by which it appears that the late Schnaar was
jointly with W: Volkwyk appointed guardians of the said Hauff and
administrators of his property. The said Hauff declared to him a claim against
the joint estate but papers were produced proving that upwards of Rd:s3000 was
expended on his account by the said Schnaar.
A sum of Rd:s45 being declared by the widow to belong to the slaves Anthon
and Adam arising from monies occasionally given to them, the same sum was
accordingly delivered to the said slaves.
Thus done and inventoried at the Cape of Good Hope on the 17:th and 19:th
April 1830 according to a statement made by the aforesaid widow who declared to
have acted herein bonafide and that to the best of her knowledge has not
withheld or secreted any thing that belonged to the aforesaid estate. And the
said appearer further declared that she is and will at all times be ready and
willing to confirm her statement by solemn oath if required promising at the
same time that if after the date of these presents any property of this estate
might be discovered shall faithfully communicate it to the Orphan Chamber in
order to amplify this inventory with the property so discovered.
In witness whereof we the Commissioners together with the appearer and me
the Secretary have subscribed to these presents.
