As the freemen of Stellenbosch and Draeckensteijn, upon their repeated and immediate request to us regarding the procession and provisional service, pursuant to our aforementioned resolution of September 12th, were relaxed, but only that, if the matter required such a thing, they would have to be transported again under their officers to this castle at the appointed ceinture, to perform their duties alongside the garrison and the freemen of this Tafelvallei for the defense and provisional purposes of this our government; that furthermore, the Most Honourable Governor on the 29th. of the previous month of November it became clear to the council that a fleet of eleven ships was shown to him against the shore,98 which were rather considered enemy than patriotic ships: And moreover, since it was not customary here to see such a strong patriotic fleet here in such military order and divided into three squadrons, that there is well Ede. immediately not only ordered the entire garrison and the freemen of this Taeffel Valley, both foot and horse, to take up arms and further established all necessary order for a vigorous resistance, but also subsequently, by the said ordered cemeteries, which Stellenbos and Draackensteijn also informed of, and, in all due diligence, so that they would not be ignorant in this matter, pretended to confirm the same by various expresses, to the end that they would have to proceed to this castle as soon as possible under their banners and standards, from which they all, however (unfortunately) remained in breach: wherefore the Well Esteemed Mr. The Governor declared that he had a great cause for not only the aforementioned inhabitants there, but especially also the town councillors and officers of Stellenbosch and Draakensteijn to cultivate inobedience and disloyalty, as being unwilling to help promote and advance the work of the common good of this government, and to which they are bound under oath to the E.Compe.: Thus declared his Honour, in order that such disorder might be averted in the future, and that, conversely, we might faithfully offer each other a hand in all possible enemy attacks, for the maintenance and defense of the common good of the aforementioned. had summoned the town councillors and officers today to give reasons for their reluctance to this High Court political meeting and that some censure might therefore be exercised against the disobedient: on which the aforementioned The aldermen and officers, politely pleading their innocence, admitted that they had indeed heard the fired cemeteries and had received the espressos; and that they had then beaten the drum to get the people to take up arms and thus, armed, under their banners and standards, marched towards this fortress (in performance of their duties), but that they had not been able to accomplish this, no matter what they had tried to do, because the people (with the exception of a few) showed complete reluctance to march, saying that they had not heard the cemeteries, that nevertheless their officers and a few people had set out on their way, as had the captain Hans Jurgen Grimp, with the standard and three horses, which had been advanced near the Cuijlen, received orders from one Lourens Verbrugge, a freeman from Stellenbosch, so that they might freely return home, as they were Dutch ships; that he had also returned on this order with the horses he had with him; whereupon the aforementioned Lourens Verbrugge, having been heard, admitted that he had not received any instructions from anyone to convey such order, but that he had done so for his own reasons; that furthermore, his Honor and this Honourable Political Council, considering that the responsibility of the aforementioned the town councillors and officers, according to the truth, have resolved to dim the same (under representative and sharp admonitions to more exactly observe their oath made to the Company in the future and to be more ready in their service) and that the aforementioned Louwerens Verbrugge would be placed in arrest, provided that the aforementioned town councillors were charged to send the standard-bearer at Draackensteijn, named Gerrit Cloeten, over his refusal and unwillingness, assisted by a corporal with 7 or 8 men, and to record the names of all the unwilling on a written roll, to be tried all according to merit by our prosecutor. to be fiscally acted upon with the threat that, should this happen again in the future, they would be deprived of all privileges and privileges they had received from the E.Compe. up to now. that they would be privatized, and that they would not have to expect any help or assistance from the E. Compe., nor that any Compe. servants would be transferred to their service; that furthermore, in all cases, every one of the respective inhabitants is obliged, at the hearing of the ordered sail and the beating of the drum, to immediately proceed under his banner and standard, in order to be able to march with them to this fortress; And if such a thing were impossible for someone, they would nevertheless be obligated to follow their banner or standard as quickly as possible, being obliged in such a case to give us reasons why they did not appear under their banner or standard, in order to be duly recognized by us as to their sufficiency or insufficiency.
Furthermore, the Honourable Mr. The Governor also pointed out that some malicious actors, despite the numerous placards issued against them,101 were not spared their notice by secretly conducting cattle trade with the Hottentots over the mountains (to the considerable benefit of the Dutch Company), and that these were being hidden and concealed among them. Therefore, they were to write to the Majors requesting that His Honor be permitted to occupy three posts, where His Honor will find it more advisable to prevent this traffic, with military personnel at their own expense. They also stated that, for the purpose of finding out, a monthly tribute could be levied on them head by head, with His Honor having the last letter from their Honor. Alsoo de vrijborgeren aan Stellenbosch en Draeckensteijn op haar iteratieff en instantelijck aan ons gedaan versoeck van den optoght en dienst bij provisie ingevolge onse genome resolutie van den 12 September laastleden, waren gerelaxeert doch niet anders als dat sijluijden de saack sulcx vereijschende op de verordineerde ceijn-schooten haer wederom onder haer officieren nae deese Casteele souden hebben te transporteren, omme tot defentie en manctenue van dit ons gouvernement haren dienst neffens ‘t guarnisoen ende de vrijborgeren van dese Tafelvalleij mede te presteren: dat voorts den Wel Edle. Hr. Gouverneur op den 29e. van de voorleden maand November conschap becomende dat hem een vloot van elf scheepen voor de wal vertoonde,98 welcke men eerder voor vijandlijcke als vaderlandsche scheepen considereerde: E’ meer, alsoo men alhier niet gewoon was soo een stercke vaderlantsse-vloot in sodanige militaire ordre en in drie esquadres verdeelt, hier te sien, dat daer op sijn wel Ede. aanstonts niet alleen het geheel guarnisoen ende de vrijborgeren van deese Taeffelvalleij t’ voet en t’ paart in de waapenen deede comen ende voorts op alles de nodige ordre tot een vigoreuse resistentie stelde, maar ook vervolgens door de geseide verordineerde ceijn-schooten die van Stellenbos en Draackensteijn daer aff ook kennisse gaff, ende alle seeckerheijts-halve, op dat sij desen aangaende geen ignorantie souden hebben, te pretenderen het selve door diversse expressen mede liet confirmeren ten eijnde dat sij op het spoedighste onder haar vaandels en standaart haer nae desen Casteele souden hebben te begeven, waar aff sij alle echter (des ongeleth) ingebreecken waren gebleven: weshalven den Wel Ede.
