It has been suggested to the married Comps. servants here at Cabo de Boa Esperance that their board and lodging are somewhat meager and therefore they request that something be made up for this. It has therefore been deemed appropriate that each married wife from now on add 25 lb. to her board and lodging every month. hard bread, and whatever more of it may have to be paid as previously established: 2 stuivers for each pound, and black sugar at 5 stuivers for brewing beer, white sugar according to arrangement, except for the bookkeeper and unmarried assistants, who (at one of the married housewives at a common table for their ordinary ration money in the boarding house) will enjoy free hard bread, barley and beer, but with discretion and moderation according to the customs of Batavia, provided that everything remains subject to such changes as after this, mostly in the service of the E. Compe. It might be deemed appropriate, provided that the above is not further arrested except at the further approval and approval of our Lord Masters in the fatherland. This Assembly is also proposed by Jannetjen Boddijs van Doesburch, wife of the sargeant of this fortress, which, being burdened with children and having neither granted herself nor any freedom, should, like the gardener's wife, the Boerin, also be allowed to keep an inn for the remuneration and accommodation of the outgoing and incoming men of passing ships: So this is also granted to her under the same condition as the said Boerin, but with the express interdiction that she shall not be allowed to debaucher nor tap any of the fortress's people, especially on days and times when they have to attend to their work and duties, on a fee of 6 Ra. to forfeit and remain subject to such further ordinances and regulations as shall be deemed necessary from time to time thereafter for the establishment and maintenance of good order at the boarding house, etc., for the best and most peaceful conditions of this place. Thus done and resolved in the Fort of Good Hope on the day and year as above. [Signed:] JAN VAN RIEBEECK. 1656. [Signed:] JAN VAN HERWERDEN. 1656. [Signed:] ROELOFF DE MAN, SECRETS.
