Yesterday, praise God, the sailboat Nachtglas returned here safe and sound from St. Helena. It would be very necessary to keep it here until further notice on Madagascar, etc., especially since the sailboat Tulp (sent there on August 15th) has, against all suspicion and expectation, not yet appeared, leading to some concern about the disaster that God would have prevented. However, it should be noted that the skipper and the chief pilot of the aforementioned Nachtglas (also present to strengthen the Council regarding this resolution) declared that it would not be able to sail on its single skin (all that has been eaten) for more than eight months without being doubled, which is why there is absolutely no reason here at the Cape. occasion be, Soo is 't alles heeft wat voor meer service van d’ E. Çompe. It might be most useful, as has been established by the Council (reinforced as above), to depart the garrison with the first of all to Batavia, but since it is now too late to be sent to the North this season, it is also early enough for inland travel, and that in the meantime the same embassy could reach Madagascar without much delay: in order to find out where or how things are with the Tulp or from which place and at what time they might have left last, it is understood that the journey should be made via Madagascar and Mauritius, from there with one more advice to Batavia, but principally to find out everything after The aforementioned galyot the Tulip, in order to perhaps acquire some language or language equivalent of it, and to offer some assistance upon encounter, especially from people who (according to news) had lost 2 pieces of French artillery by the explosion of eleven pieces. According to this, it was also decided to strengthen the night glass to 25 heads: to transfer 8 or 10 to the Tulip and to take them to Batavia if the chiefs agreed to issue a broader mandate.

Furthermore, in view of the good testimony of the chiefs of the said garrison concerning the person Pieter Jansz van Leeuwaerden, who was confessed by E. Sarcerius279 and his subordinate Fleet Council to St. Helena according to their letter concerning errors committed, to serve his time here at the Cape in the chain house, it is understood, since280 the copy of the sentence is not present to us, but, principally for the aforementioned reasons and also in view of the multiple intercessions etc., to leave him on the garrison and to allow his execution to proceed to Batavia: as well as resigned to the discretion and approval of the Honorable Governor General and Council of India, with the hope of their Honor. We will not take this ill.281

Thus done and resolved in the Fort of Good Hope on the day and year as before.
