Since Joost van der Laeck, a corps of soldiers, because of his bad conduct and the opposition he has committed, etc., has been placed in apprehension before our Council, and consequently his serving place is vacant, which has therefore been filled with another suitable person, in order that the guards and all good order may be maintained among the soldiers, especially by night and day, we have in addition the person of Paulus Petkouw van Dansicq, midshipman, whom the Rev. Compe. served in India for many years before this and was present here with us, provisionally observing the rounds and guards at night as a corporal, appointed in that place on a provisional basis, and in complete decency and authority as the previous one, to command the soldiers as a provisional sergeant, to which end it was also considered good, to hand over the helbart20 at the first opportunity, and to provisionally authorize the people in his service to begin: Willem Muller, midshipman here also, and also being a fine, down-to-earth person, to deputize the provisional corporal's place in the place of the aforementioned Poulus Petkauw, so that good order and discipline both among soldiers and no infringement or harm will occur to sailors, and since our Council is quite weak: to appoint delegated judges from there, who would handle the matters that are still pending between E. Johan van Riebeeck and Joost van der Laeck, aforementioned. Due to opposition and an unlawful act, which, to the great disrespect and diminishment of his authority, and which, as seen, tends to be perpetrated, it has been decided to use delegated judges and have them decide the aforementioned cases. The following four persons, namely the skipper of the yacht Sijmon Turver, as presiding judge, Gerrit Abelsz, helmsman of the yacht, Poulus Petkou, and Jan van Gulijck, provisional corporals,
to whom, as delegated judges, the aforementioned Riebeecq will intend his action, hereby appointed by the assistant Pieter van den Helm as provisional fiscal in the cases against the corporal Joost van der Laeck, to be discussed as is proper.
Thus done and resolved at Cabo de Boa Esperance in Fort de Goede Hoope during the day as above.
