In the presence of all the members, except the Reverend Administrator Andries de Man, Cornelis Linnes, and Johannes Blum. Assumptis Govert Roos41 and Marselis Kok42, skippers, along with Hendrik Raab43 and Carel Frederik Groen44, junior merchants.
The Reverend Commander announced to the meeting how God Almighty had pleased to allow the King of France's flute La Normande, which had been here two years ago under the flag of Mr. de Vaudricourt and had recently arrived from Pondicherry, and was laden with a cargo of over 150 rupees, to fall into the hands of the Reverend Company without significant bloodshed yesterday afternoon. This was unanimously agreed upon and approved, for the benefit of the Reverend Company. and, in accordance with our duty, to keep accurate records and accounts of the conquest, so that we can account for it at any time, as and when appropriate, and to this end to commit Johs. Blum, this garrison accountant, and Melchior Kemels, Secretary of the Councils of Justice, with Carel Ferdinand Groen, junior merchant in the service of the Royal Dutch Company, on the return ship Saamslag, moored here, with Hendrik Raab, fellow junior merchant on the ship Nederland, to unload the goods and merchandise from the Normande in the presence of the fiscal Cornelis Linnes and to properly inventory them.45
Furthermore, the aforementioned to distribute goods among the return ships of the last order and send them to the homeland, both the Batavian and Ceylon return ships will sail to the conquered Normandy. It has been agreed to appoint Jacob Landsheer, currently chief mate of the Saamslag, as skipper on these ships, as a temporary measure.
And to avoid being burdened here for long with the French prisoners,46 who would not be a major nuisance to us in the event of an enemy attack, and who could otherwise do little good here, especially since we have no suitable prisons for their safekeeping. It has also been agreed to distribute these among the aforementioned return fleet, and especially the officers, to the homeland, and to send the remainder to India with the outgoing ships.
And whereas the French Company ship, Le Coche, is also seen here every hour, and that she has sailed within 60 miles of this Cape, in company with La Normande, with order and intention to call at this port: It has been agreed unanimously that the aforementioned If the French ship Le Coche is seen from this port, the ships Saamslag and Nederland will weigh anchor and must sail. D’ Ed.Hr.Commandeur heeft ter vergadering bekend gemaakt hoe ‘t God Almagtig gelievd hadde in ‘s Comps. handen sonder merkelijke bloedstorting gisteren namiddag te doen vallen ‘s Konings van Vrankrijk fluijtschip La Normande , voor twe jaaren onder de vlag van den Hr. de Vaudricourt hier angeweest en jongst van Pondcherij gekomen, en beladen met een cargasoen van ruijm 150 ? Rupien, oversulx is eenpariger stemme verstaan en goedgevonden, ten dienste van d’ E.Comp. en in betragting onser pligt, pertinente anteikening en rekening van ‘t veroverde te houden, om t’ allen tijde ‘t selve te kunnen verantwoorden, daar en so dat behoord en ten dien einde te committeren Johs. Blum, deses guarnisoensboekhouder, en Melchior Kemels, Secretaris van Raaden van Justitie, mitsgs. Carel Ferdinand Groen, onderkoopman in dienst der E.Comp., op ‘t hier geänkerde retourschip Saamslag bescheiden, mitsgs. Hendrik Raab, mede onderkoopman op ‘t schip Nederland bescheiden, om ten overstaan van den fiscal Cornelis Linnes, de goederen en koopmanschappen uijt de Normande te lossen en deselve behoorlijk t’ inventariseren.45
Verders is verstaan de voors. goederen over de retourschepen der laatste besending te verdeelen, en deselve naar ‘t vaderland te senden, werwards ook en onder de vlag van den Commandeur der laatste so Bataviase als Ceijlonse retourschepen de veroverde Normande gaan sal: en is verstaan op deselve bij manier van voor-raad tot schipper an te stellen Jacob Landsheer, thans opperstuurman op de Saamslag .
En om niet lang hier met de gevange Franse46 beladen te zijn, dewelke bij vijandelijke attaque ons niet als seer hinderlijk souden konnen zijn, en die andersins hier weinig goeds konnen stigten, en te meer dewijl wij t’ harer bewaring geen bekwame gevangenhuijsen hebben: So is mede verstaan, deselve op de voors. retourvloot, en voornamelijk d’ officieren, te verdeelen en na ‘t vaderland, en ‘t overschot met d’ uijtkomende schepen na India te versenden.
En nademaal ‘t Franse Comps. schip, Le Coche , mede alle uuren hier te gemoed gesien word, en dat ‘t selve op 60 mijlen na tot an dese Caab, in geselschap van La Normande geseild heeft, met ordre en intentie om dese rhede an te doen: So is verstaan met eenparigheid van stemmen dat so haast ‘t voors. Franse schip Le Coche van dese rhede gesien sal worden, de schepen Saamslag en Nederland hun ankers sullen ligten, en onder seil hebben te gaan, en ‘t Franse schip, indien de wind en ‘t weder daartoe wil dienen, voorbij te seilen, onder schijn als of-se vertrekken wilden, en niet te wenden, voor en aleer ‘t selve hier ter rhede ten anker soude gekomen zijn, en alsdan hem an beide sijden an boord te leggen, en hem te vermeesteren, onder scharp en streng verbod van niet te plunderen.47
Aldus geärresteerd en besloten in ‘t Casteel de Goede Hoop ten dage en jare als boven.
