English translation

Since we are generally burdened here with much sickness from the incoming ships, for which reason a suitable sickhouse has been built behind it with a stone embankment outside in the hornwork in front of the fort near the seafront, where267 they are all well provided for and wages are paid at Comp's expense, nevertheless, although we (as we daily examine it) also notice that many are so poorly provided for sleeping well that some (having nothing under or over) are especially completely devoid of their sacks, so (considering the necessity of preserving the people's health) it is at the service of the aforementioned Comp's. It was considered advisable to have one hundred good bulkheadsacks made, and a main cushion of sailcloth kept in stock to accommodate those needed, to provide it at a rate of one yard, each approximately as much, but not more, as the E. Company would cost for the sailcloth, and this was primarily done so that the sick, in addition to the good salary, could also enjoy their proper comfort.

Furthermore, seeing that the barrels are somewhat sparsely depleted of fish oil as they had fermented, as much of it is used for wagon grease as otherwise, it was also decided to sail the seal yacht and the sloop Peguijn with the first good wind to Dasseneijlant and Saldanha Bay: to burn a consignment of fish oil from the sea lions there (which are very fat with speck), and to find out together everywhere on the islands how the seals are doing, and if any letters from France or other ships (coming from Madagascar) can be found somewhere: and from there to learn further news of the galley Tulp on 14th August. Passado departed for this large island, and, exceeding all expectations, at the same time received orders to catch some fish and to spot or salt them for food for the people of this garrison, whereupon a suitable officer was also appointed. Thus done and resolved at the Fort of Good Hope on the day and year as above.
