English translation
Having made known to the E.Her Commendeur in Rade how he had been pressed on the report made to him by the Chief Master Wilhelm ten Damme regarding the serious and vanity-mixed illness of the E.administrator Andries de Man on the first day of the month, in consideration of his duty at the service of the E.Comp. to the sick d' E.E. Hijeronimus Cruse, scoutmaster of the settlement, provided that: to send the fiscal mr. Johannes van Keulen to appear before the secret scribe Joh. Guil. de Grevenbroek, offering all helpful assistance, to ask him whether, in view of his precarious and perilous situation, it would not be in his best interest to have some capable person at his assistance for the closing of the trading books.71 He had previously replied that he did not always require assistance, as long as he could move his tongue, but that this afternoon he had personally approached the Commendeur, requesting, because of the weakness of his body and sight, as well as the ignorance of his clerks in bookkeeping, in addition to the urgent need for the closing, the shopkeeper, Sr. Cornelis Pietersz Linnes was added; this request having been thoroughly considered in Council, it was unanimously decided and approved, due to the necessity of time and scarcity of more qualified persons, to grant it, although it seems to conflict with the E. Comps. order to grant a shopkeeper access to the business books. He was further instructed to ensure that copies of the business books of the previous year were sent to Batavia for filing there.72
Thus arrested and confined in the Castle of Good Hope. Year and day as above.
