English translation

In the presence of the Honorable Gentlemen of Bevere and the Commander, along with the other members of the Council, except for Sirs Van Keulen, Van Breugel, and Van der Stel.29

The chiefs of the surviving Portuguese ship No. Sta. de los Milagros, having made known by petition in Council, how, after the shipwreck with the King of Portugal, they had salvaged a capital of five hundred thousand rixes, consisting of diamonds, having fortunately landed here and having no hope, chance, or expectation of being able to salvage any of His Highness Mayts's or other goods in or around the wreck, despite the favorable offer from the Honorable Honourable With the Commander's help, they were compelled, in order not to incur unnecessary expense for their King, to abandon the aforementioned wreck and all its belongings, and, at the opportunity of the return ship Emeland, to request permission to sail with it to Holland, accompanied by eleven of her sailors.

After deliberation, it was approved by seven of the chief officers, namely the chief and second merchant, the first mate, the bookkeeper and boatswain, the gunner, and the gunner, to grant their request.

The first four were to be decommissioned in the cabin of the aforementioned ship and lodged in the cabin, if possible; and the rest were placed in the gunner's room according to rank and next to the Comps. servants were modestly imprisoned there, leaving at the disposal of her Ed. Ho. Achtb. the assessment and collection of board and lodging, freight, and other debts, both of her persons and goods. And seven of her sailors, who immediately request to be accepted into the service of the E.C.O., will be assigned to the ships Oosterland and De Beurs, which are moored there, to sail to Batavia and make their request known to the High Government of India. They will be divided, namely four on the former and three on the Amsterdam Exchange, provided that during the voyage they will be held responsible for their board and lodging.31

Thus arrested and confined in the Castle of Good Hope, for the year and day as above.
