We,118 undersigned Teunis de Hoop, skipper of the flute Baren moored here, Arij van Brakel, master carpenter, and Jan Pasnenier,119 chief captain and crew chief at the service of the E. Company here duly substantiated, declare as if by order of the E. administrator and second in command of these commandments we have expressly committed ourselves to inspecting the Company. A vessel named the Jupiter, currently on the beach for renovation, which we have found, after proper and careful inspection, to be constituted as follows:
That the doubling of the said vessel, having been completely destroyed and eaten by worms, must be dismantled and must necessarily be fitted with a new cover.
That the rudder and centreboards have also been found to be in such poor condition that new covers must be required.
Without which doubling, including the replacement of the rudder and centreboards, is beyond all reasonableness and impossibility for the E. Compe. From now on, only the least amount of service will be possible from the said vessel.
Thus done in the Castle of Good Hope, January 11, 1686.

Wij118 ondergesz. Teunis de Hoop, schipper op ‘t hier ter rede leggende fluijtschip Baren , Arij van Brakel, meestertimmerman, en Jan Pasnenier,119 onderstierman en de equipagiemeester ten dienste van d’ E.Comp. alhier bescheijden, verclaren als door ordre van den E. administrateur en seconde persoon deeses commandements expres gecommitteert tot het besigtigen van ‘s Comp. vaertuijgh, genaemt de Jupiter , tegenwoordig tot vertimmeren op strant staende, ‘t welck wij naer behoorlijcke en nauceurige inspectie bevonden hebben te sijn geconstitueert als volgt, namentlijck:
Dat de verdubbeling van gemelte vaertuijgh t’ eenemael sijnde vergaen en van de worm opgegeten, deselve afgesloopt ende nootsaeckkelijck met een nieuwe huijt sal moeten werden versien.
Dat mede het roer en de swaerden in soo slechten stant bevonden hebben, dat nootwendig de novo van nieuwe do. sal dienen versogt te sijn.
Sonder welcke nootsakelijck verdubbeling mitsg. vernieuwing van roer en swaerden het buijten alle apperentie ende onmogelijck is dat d’ E.Compe. van gemelte vaertuijg voortaen eenige de minste dienst sal connen trecken.
Aldus gedaen in ‘t Casteel de Goede Hoop adij 11e Januarij 1686.
