With the most recent land expedition in September last year, a good number of virtuous sheep108 were secured by the Soeswase nation, without which we would have been in dire straits due to the multitude of ships, not only because of these but also because of the many ships themselves, and because of the sickness of the ships in the hospital, we have not only a considerable number of them, but also a much larger number consumed by the ships themselves. Without us having at least a few in stock, although care must be taken to ensure that, against the arrival of the impending return fleet, a good quantity of suitable sheep for slaughter are in stock, which the Company. of itself is not capable, nor without exchanges against that time is not capable, wherefore no other forwarder can be found, except to make another exchange, as the following has been approved and arrested, namely after the Hessequan nation to the east of Africa, withholding them, and indeed the most robust, which would be used for this expedition, due to a lack of suitable material, as chiefly a corporal added 15 soldiers at his assistance, so because of the remoteness that one cannot know what difficulties might manifest themselves in the regiment of the Hottentoots. Tobacco and other merchandise necessary for the cattle trade will be abundantly supplied, so that they will not be short of it.

Met de jongst gedaane landttocht in de maant September laastleden na de Soeswase natie wel een goede nomber deugtsaeme schapen108 sijnde machtigh geworden, sonder de welcke wij ons doenmaals door de veelheijt der scheepen in verlegentheijt souden hebben gevonden, sijnde deselve niet alleen maar noch vrij meerder getal daar en boven soo voor de siecken van de schepen in ‘t hospitael als aan de schepen selfs geconsumeert, sonder dat wij altans weder eenige de minste in voorraet hebben, daar nochtans wel bij sonder dient gelet en sorge gedragen dat tegens de komst van de aanstaande retourvloot uijt Indien een goede quantiteijt bequaame slachtschapen in voorraet sijn, die d’ Comp. van haar selfs present niet machtigh is, noch sonder ruijlingen tegens dien tijt niet machtigh staat te werden, weshalven geen ander expedient is uijt te vinden, als om weder een ruijling te doen, gelijck dienvolgende is goet gevonden en g’arresteert, te weten na de Hessequase natie om de oost van Affrica haar onthoudende en wel de veerijckste sijnde, sullende tot dese tocht werden gebruijckt, bij gebreck van bequaemer stoff, als hooft een corporael bij gevoegt 15 soldaten t’ sijnder assistentie, soo om de verre affgelegentheijt als dat men niet kan weeten wat swarigheijt sigh in ‘t reguart van d’ Hottentoots soude connen openbaaren. Van taback en verdere coopmanschappen tot den veehandel nodig, daar van sal men haar rijckelijck proviandeeren, op dat daar om niet comen verlegen te vallen.
