The administrator and second, having presented these commandments at the meeting, demonstrated the very meager supply of rice in the Company's warehouses, and that at present there are more than 30 loads of that necessary grain in stock, of which the Company needs approximately 4 loads every month to feed its servants, after which rough calculation the Company only for its slaves, without taking the garnishment into account, no longer than 7 months can suffice, and consequently no longer than until the end of May of the following year, 1686, without taking into account the usual spillage and spoilage to which those grains are subjected, besides that no petition has been made from here for the upcoming 106 of that grain from India, and consequently nothing can be expected from there, which could cause one here considerable embarrassment, especially under the regime of the slaves who, besides that with other grains they cannot manage at all well, in which experience sufficiently teaches us, and consequently it is highly necessary that an expedient be invented by which the aforementioned grains, as much as was practically possible, were commingled,107 in order to be able to reach them for much longer, which was subsequently proposed by His E. to the other members of the Council that, for the reasons concerning this, one should not enter into the aforementioned grain ration, which matter having been carefully deliberated, it was unanimously decided to postpone the ration regarding the aforementioned grains to the utmost; and as an expedient, it was invented that the slaves in the general administration of the Company will henceforth receive their usual monthly ration from the warehouses: half of their ration in rice, and the other half in 10 lb. Heart bread, the last of which our stores are still fairly well supplied with, will be somewhat difficult for them at first, but we may hope that they will become accustomed to eating the bread altogether, so that if the crops here are successful, the E. Company will achieve its objectives.
Thus done and arrested in the Castle of Good Hope, date above.
