Presentibus de Hr. Commandeur Simon van der Stel, Arnout Muijckens, chief merchant,19 Jeronimus Cruse, captain, Meijndert Pruijs, skipper of Waterlant, Andries de Man, fiscal, Theunis de Hoop, skipper of Baaren, Jan Baptist Dubertijn, lieutenant.
Presented by the Honourable Commander in loco to the meeting, that the Ede. Gentlemen Directors, at the meeting of the 17th, by the same general letter dated 29 November 1683, have kindly agreed, on our presentation here, that, in consultation with the Ordinary Councillor and Commissioner of this residence, the Honourable Mr. Rijckloff van Goens,20 present here, with his Honour. would deliberate [sic] to send a dispatch from here to the island of Madagascar, a place indicated in our general letter of April 18th, among other things, passado, stating on the south latitude of 20 degrees and an estimated length of 62 degrees 37 m. where it was said that opulence of slaves and rice could be obtained for a reasonable and low price, but since the usual travel time within this main coast straight to the aforementioned place has elapsed a long time, and that the voyage as such could not be brought to fruition and yet slaves are necessarily required for the promotion of the much-needed agriculture and other works, So it was by His E. the Commander aforementioned. (on the authorization of High Honourable Commissioner Rijckloff van Goens21 , because of his continuing indisposition) proposed in Rade, because the river Bhaaren has lain here fruitlessly for some time now, or it could not be done in similar ways as in 1678 the yacht d'Elisabeth did, from here to Magellan it lay at the said island of Madagascar at the S.B. of 15 degrees 30 mt. and estimated length of 71 degrees 40 mt. to negotiate there at least as many lives as the scarcity of time and money will allow, noting that the aforementioned Magelage is available for Mexican-Spanish reals throughout the year, although slaves are more readily available at one time than at another, whereupon, the advice of the respective skippers having first been heard, the meeting hereby accepts that at this time of year one can sail more of the aforementioned Magelage without difficulty, provided that the course is such as the sailing order for that of the yacht Elisabeth, conceived by its chiefs, followed in pursuit and accomplished with the desired success dictates. It was thereupon unanimously decided and resolved that the said vessel Bhaaren should be dispatched thither, the sooner the better, the chiefs of whom should, in accordance with the instructions and sailing orders of the aforementioned Elisabeth, station themselves over the island of Mouritius, both to be sure of their position, and to bring in some supplies, and again to take in as many planks as will be necessary for the slaves to trade on Madagascar, starting from the aforementioned Mouritius, then further round the NE corner of greater Madagascar to the aforementioned Magelage. To trade there as many slaves as is reasonably possible, provided that this caution is exercised upon departure, so that sufficient time can be made to be here again before the end of the southeasterly monsoon, and at the latest in the month of May of the following year, 1685. Furthermore, for the voyage, such cargo as is necessary and available here will be prepared, principally consisting of 2,000 Mexican eighteen-pound pieces, as the Company's cash has, to our knowledge, not been provided with a larger quantity of this material. The remainder consists of a party of black clogs, axes, gunpowder, etc. to see if the latter can also be considered a matter for bargaining, although experience has sufficiently shown that the aforementioned Magelage was not withdrawn as cash.

Door den E.Hr. Commandeur in loco ter vergaderingh voorgedraagen sijnde hoe dat de Ede. Heeren Bewinthebberen ter vergaderinge van de 17n bij der selver generade missive sub dato 29 November 1683 op onse gedaane voorstellinge van hier hebben gelieven consent te draagen dat men bij paresse van den althans hier aanweesende Raadt Ordinair en Commissaris deeser residentie, de Edle. Hr. Rijckloff van Goens,20 met sijn Ede. soude delibeereren [sic] om een besendingh van hier nae ‘t eijlant Madagascar te doen, ter plaatse in onse generaele missive van den 18 April oa. passado aangeweesen, leggende op de Z.b. van 20 gr. en gegiste lencte van 62 gr. 37 m. daar geseght wert opulentie van slaven en rijs voor een civile en geringe prijs soude te becomen zijn, doch aangesien deordinarijtijt binnen deese vaste kust door reght toe naer de voors. plaatse lange verloopen is, en dat de toght als nue soodanigh niet soude kunnen ten effecte gebraght werden en eghter evenwel nootsaackelijck slaaven tot bevordeningh van den hoogh nodigen lantbouw en andere wercken vereijschen, Soo is door sijn E. den Commandeur voorne. (op de authorisatie van Hoogh E.Hr. Commissaris Rijckloff van Goens21 , vermits desselffs continueele indispositie) in Rade geproponeert, dewijle ‘t fluijtie Bhaaren nue hier ‘t seedert eenigen tijt vrughteloos ter rheede geleegen heeft, of het selven niet soude cunnen op gelijcke wijsen als in den jaaren 1678 ‘t jaghie d’ Elisabeth gedaan heeft, van hier nae Magelagie meede geleegen aan gemelte eijlant Madagascar op de Z.Bte. van 15 graden 30 mt. en gegisten lenckte van 71 gr. 40 mt. despescheeren22 omme aldaar ten minsten soo veel leijffeijgenen te negotieeren als de schaarsheijt van tijt en gelt sall willen toelaaten, gemerckt opgemelte Magelage voor Mexicaanse Spaanse realen ‘t geheele jaar door, hoewel d’ eene tijt beeter als d’ ander, slaven te becoomen sijn, waar op voor eerst gehoort sijnde ‘t advis van de respe. schippers, ten deesen fine de vergaderinghe g’assumeert, behelsende dat men in deese tijt van ‘t jaar meergemelte Magelage sonder swaarigheijt beseijlen kan, mits de cours soodanigh aanstellende als de zeijlaas ordere voor die van ‘t jaght Elisabeth geconcipieert door desselffs opperhoofden aghtervolght en met gewenst succes volbraght largo dicteert. Soo is daar op wijders met eenparige stemmen goet gevonden en geresolveert dat het gemelte fluijtie Bhaaren , hoe eer hoe liever, derwaarts gedepescheert sall werden, sullende de opperhoofden van dien d’ cours, ingevolge den instructie en zeijlaas ordere van de Elisabeth voornt., over ‘t eijlant Mouritius stellen, soo wel om verseeckert in hun gissen te sijn, als om daar eenige benoodightheeden te brengen en weederom soo veel plancken in te neemen als tot beddinghs voor de slaaven, op Madagascar te negotieeren, van nooden sullen sijn, steeckende van voorne. Mouritius dan wijders om de N.O.hoeck van meergeme. Madagascar nae Magelage voors. omme aldaar soo veele slaaven in te handelen als eenighsints doenlijck sall zijn, mits dat die voorsightigheijt gebruijckt wert in ‘t vertrecken vandaar dat genoeghsaam staat maacken cunnen omme voor ‘t verloop van ‘t Z.O. mouson en ten langsten in de maant Maij des aanstaanden jaars 1685, wederom alhier te weesen. Sullende wijders tot de toght soodanigen cargasoen vervaardight werden als daar toe van nooden en hier in voorraat is, principael bestaande in 2000 stux Mexicaanse stucken van aghten, wijl Compagnies cassa tot ons leetweesen van geen meerder getall dier stoffe geprovideert is. Voor de rest parthij negroscleeden, fotas, snaphaanen, buscruijt &a. om te sien off men23 het laastgenoemde oock jets te marchandeeren vallen can, schoon de ervarentheijt genoeghsaam geleert heeft dat op dick gemelte Magelage niet als contanten getrocken werden.
