at six o'clock in the evening.158

The Commander of the Stel de Raadt, reinforced by Commander Joan Hendrick Thim159 and the Commander of the present return ships, Steven Schorer, having had conscripted, his E. comes to deduce that the Company had entered into a certain conditional contract about four months ago with a certain captain of the Soeswaese nation, colloquially known to us as Claes, to brutally harass the King's Company at the distant Hottentoose nation for the money given to him for that purpose, in order to prevent the heavy fines that the King's Company would incur. had previously to carry a certain number from our garrison to perform this task, to send them inland & a. following which, so we have already been provided with 200 fine horned animals from the country back here by the same, and his E. has today again obtained news that the aforementioned captain has now again sent a number of 197 fine animals for the E. Comp. had negotiated with whom he had already been on his way to bring him here, but through some of his men, sent beforehand to discover the safety of the passages, obtained knowledge that the Obiecquae nation had stationed itself on the passages to plunder his Compan's cattle, whereby he had been tempted to return to his corals, and considering the aforementioned Obiecquaes are a nation that treats them with plunder, and recently some citizens with our license went inland to be allowed to shoot manatees to subdue their families, attacked them at the Elephants River, and took away all their animals to the number of 16 pieces, provided gr. one of them massacred, such outrages, violence and murders the aforementioned. Obiecquas has made several remarks about ours, without anyone having had the opportunity to resent them, since they are located in the inaccessible mountains, to do so, as a suitable opportunity now seems to have arisen. Therefore, His E. proposes to the deceased gentlemen and the other members of this assembly that it would not be appropriate to express justifiable resentment about this, since a suitable opportunity now seems to have arisen, on which proposal this matter has been taken into deliberation, so that, after the foregoing considerations, it has been found good and understood to be absolutely necessary to prevent all further murder, robbery, and public violence, which in the course of time could be undertaken even more by the said nation against the Egyptian Company and the good settlers here, to send 20 military men under the command of the admiral of this garrison there to fetch the aforementioned Captain Claes with the Company's cattle and to consort with the Soeswaese nation and at one time speculate at a suitable opportunity to entice the said Obiecquas to theft of the cattle and to present them as open enemies of the Egyptian Company. to receive and resist so much that they forget their return,160 trusting that if any of them perish or fall into our hands, they will remember them in such a way in the future.

Thus resolved in the Castle of Good Hope, date above.
