The Council, having been convened by Commander Steven Schorer139 with the three chief mates of these ships, has presented to them how, according to the contents of the 5th, 16th, and 17th articles, included in the instruction140 issued by their sworn High Command to Battavia, dated December 31, 1683, the ships Stavenisse and Adrichem, according to their Es. Resolution of the 8th of the same month of December 141 ordered to attack the south-eastern port of the island of Mauritius, for the same reason as the aforementioned Ede. instruction, of which one has been drawn up for each of the present skippers, is widely influential, as it was read out to the Council again for further information on this occasion, but since it is subsequently observed (if wind and weather are out of sight and apparent great danger is tolerated, but seamanship must be used and the aforementioned two ships must not be restrained or placed in serious danger, even if they have to be passed to avoid this), the Commander advises the Council in consultation whether it is at least not time-consuming and for the service of the Company highly necessary that the aforementioned ships Stavenisse and Adrichem, in accordance with the aforementioned Ode. Ho. Achtb. to take the course from now on as much further west as necessary, in order to sail to the said south-eastern port of the island of Mauritius and, upon arrival, to regulate it at the time of arrival, when it would be most convenient for the service of the Company. For the highly urgent reasons stated above, if it were possible to inquire there about any ships of the return fleet that departed last year for the homeland that might have strayed, and to assist them with all possible means, in response to which E. den Raat recommended that everyone do so for the service of the Company. to declare that the principal matter was of the utmost interest to them, without reflecting on how they would like to see it arranged for them in particular. Whereupon skipper Stoop, being the nearest in rank, judged that since February is currently the most dangerous time of the entire year to reach the island of Mauritius, that on the contrary, one should avoid it as much as possible, in order to avoid and evade the storms and tempests that are common there in this month. He therefore deemed it necessary for the Company's service to avoid it and to advance the voyage to the Cape as soon as possible, maintaining that their Ed. Ho. Achtb. order to use the said seamanship so much as to avoid all risks to ship and property in time, as to approach and assault the aforementioned island during this dangerous storm; further confirming this with what his naval officers, by resolution of the 8th of this month, hereby annexed, had deemed necessary for the greatest benefit.
Skipper Jan van Dorre142 similarly maintains that at this time of year it would be advisable to observe the common to avoid the island as much as possible, in order to avoid the storms that occur there at this time, except that he declares from experience that it is very difficult, indeed impossible, to reach the southeastern port of the aforementioned island of Mauritius at this time of year without a pilot, because of the low tide that occurs there. Commander Steven Schorer is of the opinion that one cannot and should not dispense with what was ordered by her Honor, Ho. Achtb., nor should her Honor tolerate any infraction in it, but that, in accordance with her instructions, one should at least sight the island of Mauritius, and that if her Honor's order then comes to mind and notice, the use of seamanship should first be considered, that is, to call at the South Eastern Port, or even to sail past it, but since a majority vote has deemed seamanship appropriate, comm. To avoid Mauritius as much as possible from now on, he declares that he wishes to be released at all times and to leave it to the responsibility of the Council, who have seen fit to dispense with the instructions of their Edes, if he supports this matter.
It is thus resolved and decided by a majority vote that the two ships Stavenisse and Adrichem, together with 't Huijs te Spijck, will continue their journey to Cabo de Boa Esperanse, and will remain on a WSW course until they reach the S. latitude of 28 degrees from where they point W.b.S. will approach the coast of Africa between 34 and 35 degrees, which will take them approximately 65 to 66 miles off Madagascar.
Thus resolved on the ship 't Huijs te Spijck, estimated to be at the southern latitude of 20 degrees and a mean length of 101 degrees, 37 meters, on the day as before.

Den Raat door den Commandeur Steven Schorer139 versterckt met de drij opperstuurluijden deser presente schepen bij den anderen geconvoceert zijnde, heeft haar voor gedraegen hoe dat volgens den inhoude van ‘t 5e 16 en 17e art. begrepen in de instructie140 door haar ede.Ho.Achtbn. tot Battavia, in dato den 31en December 1683 op ons gedepescheert, de schepen Stavenisse en Adrichem volgens haer Es. Resolutie van den 8en der selve maant December141 geordineert werden de Zuijt Oostelijcken haven van ‘t eijlant Mauritius aen te gieren, om zoodanige reden als bij gemelte haar Ede. instructie, waar van ider der presente schippers een ter hant gestelt is, in ‘t breede influeert, gelijck deselve tot naericht bij dese occasie andermael den Raat voorgelesen wert, maar dewijle daar bij in ‘t vervolg gesecht wert (zoo wint en weder buijten oogh en schijnelijck groot gevaer het selve gedoogen wil, doch zeemanschap te gebruijcken en gemelte 2 scheepen niet geresiqueert off in merckelijck gevaer te stellen, al zoude tot vermijdinge van dien het moeten voor bij geloopen werden) zoo geeft den Commandeur den Raat in overlegh off het althans geen tijt en voor den dienst van de Compa. hoogh noodigh is dat gemelte schepen Stavenisse en Adrichem in conformiteijt van gemelte haar Ede. Ho. Achtb. ordre de coers van nu aff zoo veel westelijcker nemen als noodigh is, om gesegde Zuijt Ooster haven van ‘t eijlandt Mauritius te beseijlen en haar daar comende te reguleren naar tijts gelegentheijt, wanneer ‘t wel princijpaelst met den dienst van de Comp. zoude over een comen om de voorgelesene hoog dringende redenen, indien het doendelijck was aldaar te vernemen naar eenige schepen zoo van de voorleden jaerse vertrocken retourvloot naer ‘t vaderlant mochten afgedwaelt wesen en haar met alle mogelycke middelen te assisteren, waer op zijn E. den Raat recommandeerde yder zich zoodanigh voor den dienst van de Comp. te verclaeren als met haer meesten intrest het principaelste over een quam, sonder daar ontrent eenige reflectie te nemen, hoedanigh sy het gaern voor haer in ‘t particulier sagen geschickt. Waar op door den schipper Stoop, als de naeste in rangh zijnde, geoordeelt wiert dat dewijl het thans in de maent Februarij den dangereusten tijt van ‘t geheel jaar is, om het eylant Mauritius te raecken, dat men het in tegendeel zoo veel als mogelijck behoort te schuwen, om de stormen en tempeesten die zich daer ordinarie in dese maent laten vinden te mijden en te ontweijken, dat hij derhalven voor den dienst van de Comp. noodigst achte ‘t selve te schuwen en de reijs naar de Caap direct zoo spoedigh als mogelijck te bevorderen, sustineerende dat haar Ed. Ho. Achtb. ordre zoo veel specteerde de gesegde zeemanschap te gebruijcken van den tyt aff dat alle prijckelen voor schip en goet in tyts connen werden voorgecomen als in desen dangereusen stormtijt ‘t gemelte eijlant te naederen en ‘t zelve te hasarderen; sich verder confirmerende met ‘t gene over dit subject bij sijn scheepsofficieren by resolutie van den 8en deser hier bij geannexeert was goetgevonden ten meesten nutte te vereijsschen.
Schipper Jan van Dorre142 sustineert insgelycks het dees tijt des jaars geraden te mogen wesen ‘t gem. eijlant zoo veel te schuwen als doenlijck is, om de stormen die zich aldaar dees tyt laten vinden te ontwijcken zoo veel mogelijck, behalven dat hij bij ondervindinge verclaart het beswaarlijck, ja niet doenlijck te wesen, de Zuijt Ooster haven van ‘t voorn. eijlant Mauritius dees tijt van ‘t jaar zonder lootsman aan te doen, ter oorsaecq van de lage wal die het aldaar maeckt, en gevolglijck best dat de schepen Stavenisse en Adrichem haar reijse direct naar de Caap bevorderen om de selve in geen prijckel te stellen, volgens de serieuse recommandatie van haar Ed. Ho. achtbaarhedens tot Batavia.

De stuerluijden van dees presente 3 schepen meijnen ook met den besten en zekersten dienst van de Comp. over een te comen dat in dees zorglijken tijt van de maant Februarij het eijlant Mauritius behoort geschouwt te werden soo veel mogelijck is om de stormen niet te beloopen die zich aldaar off ontrent ordinarij dees tijt des jaars wel openbaaren, maar dat men gecombineert de reijs naer de Cabo d’ Boa Esperance zoo veel doenlijck behoort te vorderen.
Den Commandeur Steven Schorer is van sentiment dat men van ‘t geordineerde door haar Ede. Ho. Achtb. niet en kan noch mach dispenseren, zulx haar Ed. ook geen infractie daar in zullen gedoogen, maar dat men in conformiteyt van haar instructie ten minsten ‘t eijlant Mauritius behoort in ‘t zicht te loopen, en dat als dan haar Eds. geordineerde eerst in bedencken en opmerckinge comt om zeemanschap te gebruijcken, dat is om de Z. Oosterhaeven aan te doen, off wel voor bij te zeijlen, maar dewijle bij meerderheijt van stemmen goet gevonden is de zeemanschap te bestaan, gem. Mauritius zoo veel doenlijck van nu aff te meijden, zoo verclaart hij Commandeur Schorer t’ aller tijt bevrijt te willen wesen en tot verantwoordige te laten van den Raat gesamentlijck die van de instructie van haar Edes., zoo hij sustineert over dit subject gegeven, hebben goet gevonden te dispenseren.
Zulx dat dan bij meerderheijt van stemmen geresolveert en gearresteert is, dat de 2 scheepen Stavenisse en Adrichem gesamentlijck met ‘t Huijs te Spijck haar reijs naerde Cabo de Boa Esperanse zullen bevorderen, en zoo langh bij de W.Z.W. coers verblijven tot dat men zal gecomen wesen op de Z. breete van 28 graeden van waer men W.b.Z. aanloopen zal om tussen 34 en 35 graden ‘t lant van Afrika aen te doen, waarmede men ontrent 65 a 66 mijlen bezijden Madagasker stevenen zal.
Aldus geresolveert in ‘t schip ‘t Huijs te Spijck , zijnde na gissinge ten Z. breete van 20 gr. ende middel lengte van 101 graat 37 m., ten dage als vooren.

Onder stont en was getkn. S. Schorer, Marinus Stoop, Jan van Dorre, R. M. Schouten, Jan Boon, Pieter van Dort, Jeroen Rijcquaeris, Jan Zeepaert en Johannes van der Graaff als schriba.
Gecollationeert accordeert.
