By Commander Simon van der Stel, the Council having been convened, assisted by all the present skippers, both of the return ships and of the other bottoms present in the roads, in which his E. proposes how that in accordance with our adopted resolution, dated 15 June of this month, the leaky return ship Azia has at least been repaired to such an extent that one of the principal leaks has been brought to the surface, incl. that his E. had been given a statement by the skipper in command, Jacob Dirckse Jaersmaa, a document issued by the same together with all the ship's officers on that bottom, which had been read and summarized in detail in Council, stating among other things that the bottom in the bow and furthermore over the entire body of the ship was very weak with the continuous pumping with two, and in any coolness and hollow water with three pumps, when anchoring here, this was declared by the joint ship's officers of the said return ship that that bottom was unsuitable to undertake the voyage from here with its full cargo to the Fatherland and that it could not and would not exist other than as a ballast ship. Whereon the ship was carefully inspected and inspected by the assembled skippers, chief craftsmen, and the experimental carpenters, who all unanimously declared in Council that the said return ship was generally quite weak and in a very poor condition, principally consisting in that outside the seams from bow to stern are completely ripped, behind under the bottom of the transom the outer cover is completely perished, which causes great leakage and by which the loaded goods are noticeably damaged and spoiled on the voyage between Battavia and the Cape, and by continuation are likely to become even more infected, in addition to the bottom in the above-mentioned devolved constitution, according to the advice of the first experimental carpenters of the respective ships present, was deemed sufficiently innavigable to be able to repatriate in that form with the bulk of the fleet, before and only after that bottom will have been relieved and lightened of its principal loading. With regards. to the constitution as much as possible repaired, in such respects as could and should be practiced and put into action according to the quality of necessity and inexcusability, skipper Jacob Jaersmaa further noted that the seam at the front of the bow that was browned here on the roadstead has again been found to be completely damaged by the strong movement of that bottom, provided that. that such a weak ship, such an important capital, ought not to be trusted, nor for any reason to forgo putting to sea with its bottom, even though as much as possible will be repaired here, with its full cargo, which is such a high-important and no less necessary matter for the preservation of that bottom and the Company's rich returns loaded therein, and to which the true service of the E. Company is so worthy, with His E. and the present Council, in serious and mature deliberation, taken on what manner to the Company. most advantage would be found in trading there. So finally, after much previous consideration, these were held together, and everything pro and con having been ventilated,101 with unanimous votes in favor of the Company's interest was arrested and it was found good not to persecute the Company's unusually wealthy return any further on such a weak ship, to moor on the Western Amstel River destined for Batavia, and arrived here a few days ago from the homeland, the cargo of which consists of a few bulky goods, which will be shipped across the river to Batavia, and that the ship will be able to take on board sufficient goods to be transported to Batavia, so that there, due to the loss of those goods, the Company. no harm will be done, and at the same time it can serve to inform her Highness in Batavia of this unexpected coincidence and the further separation of the return fleet. The most importable goods of spices, packages with fine leeches, etc., from Asia will be shipped in Wester Amstel and consigned to the presidential Chamber of Amsterdam, to the extent that the ship is fully loaded, when it is judged that the ship will be sufficiently lightened for the necessary repairs, on the advice of the master carpenter of the ship, in what way the damage to the ship can be repaired. to undertake the voyage to Patria in combination with the fleet; the defect in the transom will be taken care of and repaired as much as deemed necessary for further unloading of that bottom, with communication from the skippers and carpenters, also for the bow, provided that the seams damaged outside the stern, both on the steerage and the stern, are to be properly brazed, for which purpose all the carpenters of the ships present will be employed; the aforementioned return ship being repaired as much as possible, then, in company with the return fleet, in God's name, to have the voyage to Patria undertaken; and to hasten the progress of that as much as possible, and to allow the transfer of the goods from the aforementioned two ships to proceed by night and day, and not to have the return ships wait for them, to contribute to this and to take at hand all means that are in any way practicable and available, having been committed to ensure that no time was wasted on unloading and loading, the captain of this garrison, Jeronimus Cruse, the s. b. night, Pieter Laakens, skipper on Schielandt and Adriaan van der Werff, skipper on Strijen, notwithstanding that the Commander of the Stell will also be on leave daily to come and inspect everything on the shipyard, and further to take care of whatever might serve the progress of that in any way, but in the event of unloading and reloading the aforementioned. Both ships, Azia and Wester Amstel, and the construction of the former, due to the bad and stormy weather, or whether any more severe damage, as was certainly expected, would delay the arrival beyond July 31st, and the wind should become favorable in the meantime, in such case, in God's name, the other four return ships, Schielandt, Goudesteijn, Strijen, and Schiebroek, should be allowed to proceed on their journey, provided that Azia and Wester Amstel follow as soon as possible.

Door den Commandeur Simon van der Stel, den Raat sijnde geconvoceert g’assisteert met alle de aenwesende schippers soo van de retourscheepen als de verder present ter reede leggende boodems, waer in zijn E. proponneert hoe dat ingevolge van onse genoomen resolutie, in dato 15 Junij deser maant, ‘t lecke retourschip Azia altans soo verre is ontlost dat een der principaele lecken boven water is gebracht mitsgrs. dat sijn E. door den daer op commandeerende schipper, Jacob Dirckse Jaersmaa, was ter handen gestelt een verclaaringh bij den selven neevens alle de scheepsofficieren op dien bodem bescheijden verleent, d’ welcke in Raaden exactelijck geleesen ende geresumeert sijnde, houdende onder anderen in, dat dien boodem voor in de boegh en voorts over ‘t geheele corpus van ‘t schip seer swack bevinden met het continueelijck pompen met twee, ende bij eenige koelte en hol water met drij pompen, alhier ten ancker leggende, sulcx bij de gesamentlijcke scheepsofficieren van ‘t gemelte retourschip wert verclaart, dien bodem onbequaam is om de reijse van hier met sijn volle Iadingh naer ‘t Patria te onderneemen en dat sulcx niet anders als ballast scheeps sal connen en oock derven bestaen werden. Mitsgrs. naa de constitutie soo veel als doenlijck g’repareert, in dier voegen als naa d’ hoedanigheijt van de nootsaekelijckheijt en inexcusabelheijt sal connen en moete werden gepractiseert en in ‘t werck gestelt, doende den schipper Jacob Jaersmaa daer noch bij, dat de naade voor in de boegh die hier op de rheede sijn gebraeuwt door het sterck beweegen van dien boodem al weederom ‘t eenemael ontset heeft bevonden, mitsgrs. dat soo een swack schip soo een important capitael niet behoorde te werden betrout, oock om geen reedenen met dien boodem alschoon alhier soo veel als doenlijck sal wesen gerepareert, te derven in zee gaan met sijn volle Iadingh, welcke soo hooghwigtige en niet min nootsaakelijcke zaack tot conservatie van dien boodem en ‘s Comps. rijck daar in gelaaden retouren, en waar aan den waeren dienst van de E.Compa. soo merckelijck geleegen leijt, bij sijn E. en den presenten Raadt in serieuse en rijpe deliberaatie genoomen op wat maanier tot ‘s Comps. meeste voordeel daar in soude werden g’handelt, Soo is eijndelyck, naer veel voorgaande overweeginge diervoegen gehouden, en alles pro et contra g’eventileert101 hebbende, met eenpaerigheijt van stemmen tot betrachtingh van ‘s Comps. waeren intrest g’arresteert en goet gevonden om ‘s Comps. ongemeen rijck retour niet verder op soo een swack schip te periculiteeren, aan te leggen de fluijt Wester Amstel naa Batavia gedestineert, en voor eenige daegen alhier uijt ‘t vaderlandt aan gecomen, welckers inlaadingh eenelijck is bestaande in weijnige volemnieuse goederen, die in ‘t fluijtie Baaren sullen werden overgescheept, en dat boodemtie bequaemelijck sal connen inneemen om naa Batavia over te voeren, op dat men aldaar door ‘t derven van die goederen, d’ Compa. geen ondienst komt te geschieden, en te gelijck connen dienen om haar Ho.Edle. tot Batavia van dit onverwacht toeval en de verdere separaatie der retourvlooth meede102 kennisse te doen hebben. Sullen de importabelste goederen van specerijen, packen met fijne lijwaaten &a. uijt Azia in Wester Amstel werden overgescheept en aan de presidiaele Camer Amsterdam geconsigneert werden, tot soo verre dat dien boodem103 t’ eenemael volladen is, wanneer geoordeelt wert dat dien boodem genoeghsaam sal wesen gelicht om naa de vereijste reparati[e] op ‘t advijs van den baas timmerman van dien boodem, op wat wijse d’ leccaagie van dien boodem sal connen werden gerepareert om met de vlooth g’combineert de reijse naar ‘t Patria t’ onderneemen; sullende ‘t defect aan de spiegel soodaanigh werden versorgh[t] en gerepareert als men bij verder ontlossen van dien boodem met communicaatie van de schippers en timmerluijden sal noodigh oordeelen, oock insgelijckx voor aan de boegh, mitsgrs. de buijtewaersse ontsette naaden, soo aan stuir als backboort behoorelijck te braeuwen, waar toe alle de timmerluijden van de aanwesende scheepen sullen werden gebruijckt; ‘t meergemelte retourschip soo veel als doenlijck gerepareert sijnde, als dan in Compa. van de retourvlooth in Godes Naeme de reijse naa Patria te laeten onderneemen; en om den voortgangh van dien soo veel als doenlijck te verhaasten, en ‘t overscheepen van de goederen uijt d’ voorn. twee scheepen nacht en dagh te doen voortganck neemen, en d’ retourscheepen daer naa niet te doen wagten, alle middelen die eenighsints practicabel en bij te brenge sullen wesen daar toe te contribueeren en bij der handt te neemen, sijnd’ gecommitteert om te versorgen dat met het lossen en laaden geen tijt vruchteloos wert door gebracht den captijn deses guarnisoens, Jeronimus Cruse, den s. b. nacht, Pieter Laakens, schipper op Schielandt en Adriaan van der Werff, schipper op Strijen , onvermindert dat den Commandeur van der Stell mede dagelijcx sal vaceeren om op d’ rheede van alles te comen inspectie neemen, en verders te versorgen wat tot den voortganck van dien eenighsints soude connen dienen, doch ingevalle het met het ontlossen en weeder laaden van de voorn. beijde scheepen Azia en Wester Amstel en het timmeren aen den eersten door het quaade en ontstuijmige weder, of dat wel noch eenige swaarder leccagie, gelijck seekerlijck wert vermoet sigh op deede, langer mochte comen aan te loopen als tot den 31 Julij, en de wint inmiddels favorabel quam te werden, in sulcken geval de andere vier retourscheepen Schielandt , Goudesteijn , Strijen en Schiebroeck in Godes Naamevoor affte laaten reijsvorderen, mitsgrs. Azia en Wester Amstel soo spoedigh als doenlijck is, te laaten volgen.

Sullen de importabelste goederen van specerijen, packen met fijne lijwaaten &a. uijt Azia in Wester Amstel werden overgescheept en aan de presidiaele Camer Amsterdam geconsigneert werden, tot soo verre dat dien boodem103 t’ eenemael volladen is, wanneer geoordeelt wert dat dien boodem genoeghsaam sal wesen gelicht om naa de vereijste reparati[e] op ‘t advijs van den baas timmerman van dien boodem, op wat wijse d’ leccaagie van dien boodem sal connen werden gerepareert om met de vlooth g’combineert de reijse naar ‘t Patria t’ onderneemen; sullende ‘t defect aan de spiegel soodaanigh werden versorgh[t] en gerepareert als men bij verder ontlossen van dien boodem met communicaatie van de schippers en timmerluijden sal noodigh oordeelen, oock insgelijckx voor aan de boegh, mitsgrs. de buijtewaersse ontsette naaden, soo aan stuir als backboort behoorelijck te braeuwen, waar toe alle de timmerluijden van de aanwesende scheepen sullen werden gebruijckt; ‘t meergemelte retourschip soo veel als doenlijck gerepareert sijnde, als dan in Compa. van de retourvlooth in Godes Naeme de reijse naa Patria te laeten onderneemen; en om den voortgangh van dien soo veel als doenlijck te verhaasten, en ‘t overscheepen van de goederen uijt d’ voorn. twee scheepen nacht en dagh te doen voortganck neemen, en d’ retourscheepen daer naa niet te doen wagten, alle middelen die eenighsints practicabel en bij te brenge sullen wesen daar toe te contribueeren en bij der handt te neemen, sijnd’ gecommitteert om te versorgen dat met het lossen en laaden geen tijt vruchteloos wert door gebracht den captijn deses guarnisoens, Jeronimus Cruse, den s. b. nacht, Pieter Laakens, schipper op Schielandt en Adriaan van der Werff, schipper op Strijen , onvermindert dat den Commandeur van der Stell mede dagelijcx sal vaceeren om op d’ rheede van alles te comen inspectie neemen, en verders te versorgen wat tot den voortganck van dien eenighsints soude connen dienen, doch ingevalle het met het ontlossen en weeder laaden van de voorn. beijde scheepen Azia en Wester Amstel en het timmeren aen den eersten door het quaade en ontstuijmige weder, of dat wel noch eenige swaarder leccagie, gelijck seekerlijck wert vermoet sigh op deede, langer mochte comen aan te loopen als tot den 31 Julij, en de wint inmiddels favorabel quam te werden, in sulcken geval de andere vier retourscheepen Schielandt , Goudesteijn , Strijen en Schiebroeck in Godes Naamevoor affte laaten reijsvorderen, mitsgrs. Azia en Wester Amstel soo spoedigh als doenlijck is, te laaten volgen.
