English translation

Presentibus d'Heer Commandeur Simon van der Stel, Jeronimus Cruse, capt.; Pieter Lakens, rear admiral; Adriaan van der Werff, Cornelis Valckenburgh, Beijer Vis, Jacob Jaarsma, Matthijs Vonck, Hendrick Bontecraij, Harmen Voet,95 Andries de Man, sub-coopman, Philip Th[e]odoor Welcker, guarnisoen bookkeeper.

The commanding skipper of the return ship Asia, Jacob Jaarsma, having related in this Council how his aforementioned entrusted ship was so badly damaged and leaky that he had been able to keep it going with 4 pumps until its arrival here in Table Bay, without actually being able to know where this great leak had come from,96 adding that during the voyage they had indeed experienced that the bow was shooting out and in, and a great deal of water was flowing in as a result, as well as through the bread chambers where the spices were stored, the water was coming down in great quantity to the rear of the peak, so that it is sufficiently clear that behind or near the stern a dangerous leak will also occur, which will lead to the preservation of the ship and The Company's richly loaded returns will inevitably have to be repaired before the departure of that bottom, so that neither unloading a good portion of the cargo can be done to get the leaks above water, nor that the bottom is otherwise unsuitable for repatriation in that bad shape. Whereupon the advice of all the skippers present was heard in this Council, to that end assumed, whereupon having been carefully deliberated, So it was unanimously found good and the aforementioned is arrested. To unload the return ship Asia sufficiently to discover the leaks, when it would be more expedient to finally resolve both matters. The unloaded goods would be provisionally shipped over in the small barges and the Company's large sailing chalices, provided that, to prevent any errors and to ensure that no fraud occurs in this regard, committees would be appointed on both sides.

Thus resolved and arrested at the Castle of Good Hope, date above.
