The galley Tulp (returned from St. Helena on the 8th of this month) was inspected by the Commander and chiefs of Fort de Goede Hoope, and it was found to be somewhat weakly built, but could nevertheless be strengthened with some gunwales, and also fitted with a fore-top and bowsprit from the Cape Forest. It is also necessary to have sufficient opportunity to strengthen and equip it, so that it would be suitable and sufficient to be able to make another voyage to Madagascar to further investigate the trade that had begun there.

It should also be noted that, because of the rainy season and the fact that the seals cannot gain much benefit from their junk and small traps, it should therefore be superseded by the dry season201, between which time the aforementioned galley would be able to make a trip to the aforementioned large island without any delay. And that the Honorable Governor-General and Council of India, in their letter sent to us on the 10th of February 2022, also believe that our Lord Mrs. In the fatherland, traffic will apparently be inclined, which, according to our hopes, will not happen, it would be most necessary that with another voyage this year, we at least try to keep that trade alive and the King even more inclined towards us, since the sub-merchant Verburgh has recently given him sufficient assurance or hope of our continuation until that order is sent annually, and the King has subsequently promised to have a good supply of rice gathered in advance, etc.

The necessity of this frequentation for this location has been noted, and with due diligence, it has been decided to have the aforementioned galley properly reinforced and made suitable for the aforementioned voyage, as much as is feasible here. For this purpose, it is also understood that it should sail with the first good wind to Saldanha Bay to be cleaned and harpooned there; and, on its return voyage back from Dassen Island, to bring a cargo of shells to a lime kiln for unloading, and then to have it prepared for the aforementioned purpose.

The chief captains of the aforementioned galley have also revealed to us their surrogacy over the person of Michiel Woutersz van Dansicq, who arrived here with the aforementioned galley the Tulp on April 18, 1654, for 13 guilders as sailor-maker, to take the place of the former first boatswain Claes Wopkes, who had been appointed second mate by E. van Goens: because the skipper Samuel Volckersz, at his own request, had been transferred as a passenger to the homeland by the municipality of His E. and the second mate had been reassigned to the skipper's place, this is understood in view of the good testimony of the municipality. Chiefs, to approve the aforementioned surrogacy of the sailmaker as a boatswain, as we do hereby: and in addition to this, to pay him, according to the general article, a salary of 17 guilders per month, effective today, by halving his wages.

And as Jonas de Laguere van Haver, the midshipman Grace, arrived here in 1653, at 10 guilders per ship, and has had it used for water protection since its arrival here, and through his diligence has brought in much water to support the company. common table: sickness, etc., so that, at his many requests and instances, as well as in consideration of his extraordinary diligence and wear and tear on clothes, etc., it is hereby granted to him to earn 15 guilders monthly as a means of protection, provided that he remains obligated to serve his time at the Cape for this purpose: effective this date.

And to maintain good order in the consumption of provisions and victuals, as well as on board as is done here on land, ultimately for the benefit of the E. Compe. As cost-effective as possible, it is understood that the chiefs of the aforementioned garrison will regulate their provision for the general garrison population according to the following order or method, namely:

Here on the Rhine:

At sea.

And if fresh meat, birds, or fish can be obtained in some places without neglecting the Comp's service, then, just as is the case here on land, other costs, especially salt meat and bacon, will be saved in return, and the people will be shorn over a comb both on board and on land, to minimize murmuring among them.

Thus done and resolved in the Fort of Good Hope on the date and year as above.
