The Council, having been summoned by the Commander of this residence on behalf of the merchant Jacob van Ackersdijck,14 his Eminence proposed and presented how the Ede Lords Majors in Patnia, in response to our petition submitted last year, have kindly excused the sending of Rinse and French wines there, as a result of which the Company's warehouses are completely destitute of all Dutch wines, and that moreover we have not the least to expect from it all year round, as a result of which the tenants of the aforementioned drinks have come to us with difficulty several times and in this regard come to tolerate and support them with a good foundation, so that the Company. that this does not satisfy their desire, they will no longer be bound by the said lease, as this has been expressly conditioned upon entering into it with the E. Company, whereby the Company, in addition to the profits it receives from the said drinks, will also remain frustrated (at least in part) of the rent, not only this year, but also in the future, since no one of these residents will want to accept the said lease in the coming year, which will diminish the Cape profits by no means, as from which the principal revenues must derive, yet on the other hand, taking into close consideration the matter contained in a general letter from the Ede. The Directors, at the meeting of the 17th, dated 23 January 15 of this year, wrote to the Commander and Councillor in loco, in which Their Highness Ede expressed its displeasure regarding the taking of provisions and other necessities from both the Indian cargoes and the other supplies of the passing ships, and that, having received complaints from India in this regard that some excesses have been committed, The Highness Ede expressly orders us not to take from the passing ships any less than what we cannot do without in the utmost distress. As also the Ede. Mr. The Governor General and the Honourable Lords of the Council of India, in their latest letters here, seem not to be at all satisfied about this, and that Their Highness would also like to see this declinated as much as possible, wherefore His Honour the Council is deliberating whether one orders the lighting of some patriotic drinks for the convenience of the tapsters, as well as some butter and olive oil, of which the latter have not the least in stock and have already suffered from a shortage for some time, could resolve. Whereupon, after previous mature deliberation, it was unanimously agreed to excuse the lifting of wines from the cargo for India entirely, but in the regulation of the oil and boat that we are so desperately in need of, not only for our own supplies, but also for the flujtie Baaren and the hoecker de Quartel, the first via Mauritius to Ceylon, the other by route16 to Batavia, which will have to be provisioned de novo before their departure, to communicate of which, it has been agreed to lift ashore from the remaining ship's supplies from Tidoor, 2 barrels of butter and six semi-finished olive oil in the confidence that her Highness Ede. The High Government of India will be pleased to regard this reparation of ours as unjust, especially since we are expected to supplement the provisions for the Cape with the first ships from the Amsterdam Chamber.
Thus done and resolved at the Castle of Good Hope, dated 11/04/2018.
