Oath before the Secretary.
I promise and swear to the illustrious High Lords, States General of the United Netherlands, my sovereigns, His Highness Willem Hendrik Prince of Orange, as Governor, Captain, and Admiral General, the Lords Directors of the Dutch East India Company. I hereby declare that I am faithful and loyal to the Noble Governor-General of this state in India and to the Governor-General of this residence in this office of Secretary, to keep my secrets of the Chambers secretive, to observe the integrity of the judges and parties, and to authenticate no certificates, bonds, letters of excommunication, or any other deeds or minutes, much less to issue them, unless the people who passed and executed them have appeared in person before me and the witnesses named in them, and have clearly declared the contents thereof, as well as the minutes or protocols thereof, to the appearers and the witnesses, and have subscribed and signed them to me as secretary. and furthermore, to observe the ordinances related to this office accurately. I will not fail to do so for any reason, whether for favor, hatred, profit, or loss.
So truly must God Almighty help me.
On May 22, 1678, Clerk Andries de Man, in full session, appointed the aforementioned Secretary of the Political Council.

Heeren Staten Generaal der vereenigde Nederlanden mijne souverainen, Sijne Hoogheijt Willem Hendrick Prince van Orangien als Gouverneur, capiteijn en Admirael generaal, de Heeren Bewinthebberen van de Vereenigde Oostindische Compa. mitsgaders den Edle.Heer Gouverneur generael over derselver staat in India en den Heer Gouverneur deser residentie gehouw en getrouw te wesen in dit ampt van Secretaris mij oprechtelijck te quijten, de secreten des Camers aan niemandt te openbaren, den rechteren en parthijen vromelijck te dienen, geen attestatien, obligatien, brieven van verbande ofte eenige andere acten ofte minuten te sullen authentiseeren veel min uijtgeven, ten sij de luijden die deselve gepasseert en verleden hebben in persoone voor mij en de getuijgen in deselve genoemt, gecompareert sijn, ende den inhoude derselve genoempt, duijdelijck verclaart hebben mitsgaders de minuten ofte protocollen daarvan bij de comparanten en de getuijgen mitsgaders mij als secretaris gesubschribeert ende onderteijckent sijn, ende voorts de ordonnantien op dit ampt geraampt poinctuelijck t’ onderhouden, dit sal ick niet nalaten om eenige gunst, haet, profijt off schade.
