Gelijck mede bij ons vastgestelt ende gearresteert is, toekomende weeck met ‘et aanvoeren van zoden (als sijnde wel ‘t nootsakelijcxste) ons noch besig te houden, ende de weeck daar aan volgende (wanneer meenen met de zoden voor eerst ver genoegh gecomen te sijn) selfs als goede voorgangers aan de graff te gaan, sullende tot voortgangh derselver mede gansch geen tijt noch ijver werden verwaarloost, noch gespaart.
Ende ten opsichte bij onse resolutie mede is geresolveert om de dangereusheijt der plaats ‘t Robbeneijlandt (waar ‘s Comps. vee is weijdende, ‘t selve daarvan af te halen, Soo is bij nader resumtie noch goetgevonden met ‘et afhalen van geseijde vee (om de pregnante redenen die daar toe sijn) te blijven continueeren, mits dat het kleijn vee de schapen en bocken eerst werden afgebracht, en de treckbeesten ‘t alderlaast, als cunnende onderwijl met ‘et schulpen bijeen rijden)116 tot de calckovens noch besig sijn, en of ‘t geviel dat onder ‘t afbrengen van geseijde vee schenen overvallen te sullen werden, ‘t selve ten eersten op ‘t afsienlijcxste te ruijneeren en onbruijckbaar te maken, gelijck mede wijden is overleijdt en goet gekeurt de besettelingen aldaar een bequame chialoup van hier te bestellen om bij noot, off enigh vyand in ‘t sicht crijgende, op ‘t ceijn dat aan haerl. sal geopenbaert werden (is ‘t doenlijck) herwaerts aan te komen en sich alsoo sien te redden, en bij mancquement van goede wint dat haar onmogelyck bevinden met geseijde chialoup het recht herwaarts aan te ontvlieden, ‘t eerste lant ‘t beste te kiesen, en alsdan de chialoup en al ‘t geen tot stijvinge van den vijand dienen mocht, in den brant te steken, en ‘t vee levendigh off doodt herwaarts te brengen, Ende vermits buijten alle apparentie wel te duchten is dat daar wel enige trouwlose sijn, die over sware delicten voor al haar leven of langen tijt op dat eijlant gebannen sijn en ten dien eijnde geen werck souwden maken om hare occasie waar te nemen en de E.Compe. alle afbreuck te doen, als schadelijcke vertichtinge aan den vijand te geven, soo is mede goetgevonden ende seer nootsakelijck geacht, de sodanige, ende die maar enigsints van enige wantrouw suspect mochten wesen, daar van af te nemen ende (is ‘t nodigh) andere in desselffs plaats te statueeren.
Ende aangesien de constitutie van dese wanckelbare tijden niet wel toe te laten dat de vrijluijden (haar met schieten generende) sich van huijs al te diep in ‘t lant begeven dat w’ deselve in noot beswaarlijck soo ras bij den anderen souwden kunnen krijgen, off117 neffens de andere de vereijschte resistentie te bewijsen, Soo is mede goetgevonden om deselve bij een te houwden, en om op het gehoor van haar toegevoegde ceijn in goede ordre te kunnen sijn, het schieten van geseijde wilt aan alle vrijluijden voortaan te ontseggen en verbieden, uijtgesondert den vrijborger en gepriviligeerde traanbrander Willem van Dieden, die sulcx alleen om de redenen van ‘t traanbranden geadmitteert werd, mits dat den selven na de eijlanden gaande, als dan sal werden bijgevoeght ijmant van ‘s Comps. wegen die het vaertuijgh (‘t welck mocht comen mede te nemen) neffens geseijde van Dieden bij overval helpt in den brandt steken, ‘t welcq denselven in volle vergaderingh wel ersntigh sij gerecommandeert, oocq dat alles in die gelegentheijt souwde trachten te vernielen wat immers conde, onder die reserve dat de E.Compe. soo voor de schade van ‘t vaertuijgh als anders die daar voor mocht comen te lijden, volkomentlijck sal instaan.
Ende ingevalle dat den vijand van meninge was (‘t geene God verhoede) om ons te komen te besoecken, soo is mede goetgevonden de Hottentots alle te preadverteeren dat haar als dan aanstonts lantwaart mosten begeven en met haar vee in ‘t geberghte onthouden, alsmede geenige van haarl. onse vijanden met enigh vee (‘t sij op wat voor maniere het oocq sij) quamen te adsisteeren, als wanneer d’ E.Compe. naderhandt haar daar over seer gevoeligh souwde komen te toonen, en ‘t selve hun geensints wel laten becomen.
Ende ingevolge van onse vorige resolutie meergemelt, soo blijven andermael bij ons genomen besluijt (wegens ‘t in den brant steken van alle de vrijluijden hare huijsen soo oocq van de Compe.) vastelijck persisteren, enelijck is (bij nader overlegh)daerbij noch118 goetgevonden ‘t selve door ‘s Comps. dienaers te laten geschieden omme van derselver verrichten versekert te sijn.
Wijders is mede met den Burgerraat Elbert Diemer in volle vergaderingh overleijdt en gesproken wie dat van de burgers de trouwste en kundigste wesen souwde om het vee in tijde van noot over ‘t gebergte wech uijt de klaeuwen van den vijand te drijven en ‘t selve in goede bewaringe te houden, Soo hebben daer toe dier tijt niet finalijck cunnen besluijten, maar gerecommandeert en belast aan voorseijde Burgerraet Diemer om een rolle van de voornaemste en bequaemste patkundigers te laten formeeren en deselve toekomende weeck per de eerste vergaderingh binnen te leveren, omme daaruijt door ons en met ‘et overlegh van meergemelde Borgerraet de elexie te werden gedaan.
Den Gouverneur en Raad wederom den 18en October daar aan vergadert sijnde om enige nootsakelijcke affaires ten dienst der E.Compe. te effectueeren, en alles maken (soo ras doenlijck) in gereetheijt te hebben, wat tot resistentie van een onverwacht overvallend vijand souwde dienen, Soo verschijnt inmiddels mede in Rade den Burgerraad Elbert Diemer volgens voorgaende ordre een rolle gestelt en overgelevert hebbende aan d’ Eden. Hr.Gouverneur wegens enige bequame vertrouwde personen die de vrijl. haar vee, in tijde van noot, gecombineert met ‘s Comps. vee uijt d’ handen van den vijand heel lantwaart in, in ‘t gebergte souwde weten te bewaren, Soo is na genomen resumptie van geseijde vrijl. goetgevonden (om ons in tijts te kunnen gereddet sien) de volgende ses stucx (sijnde wel de getrouwste en lantkundigste daertoe uijt te nemen, namentlijck:
Hendrick Jacobse Schaicq, Willem Teerlingh, Francis Bastiaen, Jacob d’ Eijerboer, Hans Rutgers Troost, Thomas Mulder.
Ende tot de oppas en bewaringe van ‘s Comps. vee den baas slachten self of sijn knecht met noch vijf andere ervarene ‘s Comps. loontreckers nevens den sergt. Lourens Visser uijt Hottentots Hollant , die als hooft over den ganschen ommeslach soo wel van der vrijl. gedoente als ‘s Comps. souwde wesen, en mede cunnen gebruijckt werden om ons in nootsakelijcke voorvallen van de hoedanigheijt van ‘s Comps. en der vrijl. vee als anders secretelijck te cunnen advijseeren, ‘t welcq geoordeelt werdt hoe seer door den vijand beset waren bij nacht door Hottentots, off andere die de wegen bekent sijn, wel te connen geschieden.
Insgelijcx is mede seer hooghnodigh geacht en in vergaderinge vastgestelt (wanneer enige burgers met twee Burgerraden om groff wilt te schieten met consent van d’ Eden. Hr.Gouverneur in ‘t lant sijnde) comen te retourneren, een generale monsteringh ofte wapenschouwinge te laten doen, omme deselve doorgaens courant op het ceijn (‘t geen haerluijden sal worden geopenbaert) te kunnen bij een en in de wapenen krijgen, mitsgaders haerl. mede met eenen voor te houden hoedanigh hun bij overval119 van vijand (‘t geene God verhoede) als eerlijcke mannen ten dienste van ‘t gemeene best sullen gehouwden sijn te dragen.
Verders den 19en October de cappitn. Cuijper, Schacher, Thomas en Houttebeen in Rade verschenen sijnde en den 20en daar aan volgende den overste der Hottentots Goennema ende cappiten Udasso en …120 hebben deselve mede stucxwijs kennisse gegeven, off bij geval hier enigh vijand mochte comen, hoedanigh haar hadden aan te stellen, welcke waerschouwinge die natie gansch aangenaem van ons schenen op te nemen, en beloofden bij overval van enigh vijand, in ‘t geberghte met haar vee ver wegh te sullen trecken en geene de minste ruijlinge met deselve aan te gaan, veel min den vijand met ietwes tot afbreuck van de E.Compe. te stijven, maar in tegendeel, hare cans siende, deselve veeleer trachten om te brengen en doodt te slaan, belovende geseijde Africanen op ons voorhouden noch wijders enige van haerl. in ‘t fort bij ons te willen laten, om deselve bij nacht en ontij over ‘t gebergte en onbekende wegen gints of herwaarts met enigh advijs te kunnen wegh senden en waar van d’ E. Compe. somwijl in sulcker voegen merckelijcken dienst souwde kunnen trecken.
Ende is mede noch gearresteert ‘s Comps. grote brouwketel (die ongevaer…121 nat houwdt) mede hier binnen ‘t fort elders te plaatsen, dewelcke om sijne grote berginge mede niet qualijck hier binnen sal te passe comen, gelijck oocq alle debvoir wert aangewendt om voorts alle ‘s Comps. effecten dagelijcx binnen te brengen die noch buijten mochten sijn.
Ten laesten gemerckt de Edlen.Hr.Gouverneur, deser plaats door seker bericht in ervaringh gecomen is, dat den constapel Jacob Jansen van Biervliedt sich niet en schroomt noch ontsiet de hoedanigheijt van dit fort onder ‘t gemeen op ‘t afsienlijcxste en swackste af te malen, ende de fauten (so der enige mochten wesen) ijder een met sijn losse en onbedachte praat aan te wijsen, en die sodanigh (volgens sijn gewoonen leugen en snapachtigen aart) te vergrooten en uijt te bereijden, dat de gemeene man (veele niet beter wetende) daar door niet anders als gediscouragieert en in vreemde beduchtinge gebracht souwde kunnen werden; mitsgaders oocq door sodanige hinderlijcke en ten hoogsten strafbare leugens misleijd dat deselve wel lichtelijck in de grootste noot door diergelijcke valsche en frivole onderrichtingh tot enigh verkeert bestaan souwden trachten aff te treden, behalven dat den selven sich omtrent twee personen uijt den Raadt mede met leugens comt te besoetelen, en in haar eere seer inpertinentlijck te quetsen, als off des Gouverneurs ordre tegen gingen, Soo is dese saacke bij d’ Eden. Hr. Gouverneur, in grote opmerckinge genomen als sijnde in dese jegenwoordige becommerlijcke tijden van een seer quaat en schadelijck gevolgh, en wijders den selven over sijn schandelijck liegen hevigh gereprementeert en bij provisie op een punt in arrest laten setten om bij nader opportuniteijt over den selven te disponeeren als de saack meriteert. Werdende de straffe om redenen door den Gouverneur en Raat noch in State gehouwden; en om voors. constapel in sijn leugens t’ overtuijgen, soo is den leutenant Cruse in Rade gelast om meergemelde constapel na sodanigen plaatse off hooghte toe te gaen als den selven geseght heeft dat bequaem was om ‘t fort te dwingen, waerop den geseijden leutenant geretourneert is en gerapporteert heeft voors. plaats, (hem door den snappigen constapel Jacob Jansen van Biervlied aangewesen) ten minsten in rechte linie van de kant van de graff gelegen was …122 passen, ‘t welcq na ‘t gevoelen van alle krijgs en schietkundigers ‘t doel off kracht van ‘t geschut verre execedeert, behalven dat men van de aangewesene plaats niet anders sien conde dan een kleijn gedeelte van off op de noordelijcke zee off strantpunt; en om in alles te geruster te sijn, heeft den Gouverneur in persoon selfs diendagh123 het noch wesen besichtigen, die ‘t selve even als den luijtenant gerapporteert hadde, heeft bevonden, en evensodanigh mede door den ingeneur Joannes Wittebol die ‘t selve door ordre van den Gouverneur mede besichtigt en afgemeten heeft, en bevonden een distantie te wesen van …124 roeden, behalven dat wanneer de borstweringh sijn volcomen hoogste125 sal hebben, alsdan onmogelijck ijts van de gront van ‘t bovenverhaalde noordelijcke bolwercq sal te sien wesen, en alschoon voors. snap en leugenachtigen constapel sich nu tracht te ontschuldigen met ‘et seggen dat zedert de wallen merckelijck verhoogt waren, en noch meer stonden verhoogt te werden, Soo is effter goetgevonden den selven in arrest te houwden.
Aldus geresolveert en gearresteert in ‘t Fort de Goede Hoop ten dage en jare voors.

Invoegen bij onse jonste resolutie in dato 2 October tot den 4en do. incluijs, door ons ten meesten dienste der E. Compag. is vastgestelt met de redenen daerbenevens geexpresseert om ‘t defect deser fortresse in der ijl op te maken, en alles sodanigh te verstercken en in postuire van defensie te brengen soo ras doenlyck is, gelijck oocq bij desselfs resolutie voormelt al bequame ordre sij gegeven, en ‘t aldereerste en nodigste geacht ‘t merendeel van onse wagens te gebruijcken om zoden tot de borstweringh aan te rijden, alsmede om de rijs uijt ‘et ouwde fort hier binnen ‘t nieuwe aan te voeren, ende vermits geseijde wagens daarmede sodanigh geoccupeert sijn, datter weijnich of geen van dat nodige werck cunnen afbreken om steen off calckovenhoudt in voorraat te rijden (wa[a]rom bij dese tijden mede voor al dient gedacht te werden), Soo is seer nootsakelijck ende gansch dienstigh geacht tot ‘et aanbrengen van geseijde hout (om ons calckbranden en metselwercq niet te doen vertragen)als om de graft deser fortresse te verbreeden en verdiepen115 enige vrijluijden met hare wagens daar toe te gebruijcken, betalende aan deselve sodanigen tanto voor ijder vracht als bevorens en altijt is in gebruijck geweest, mitsgaders om ‘t werck alhier noch te spoediger doen voortgaen uijt Hottentots Hollant mede noch twee wagens ijder met acht treckbeesten en 3 van de cloeckste slaven en een Nederlander versien) te ontbieden, om welckers spoedige overkomste al ordre sij geschickt.
Gelijck mede bij ons vastgestelt ende gearresteert is, toekomende weeck met ‘et aanvoeren van zoden (als sijnde wel ‘t nootsakelijcxste) ons noch besig te houden, ende de weeck daar aan volgende (wanneer meenen met de zoden voor eerst ver genoegh gecomen te sijn) selfs als goede voorgangers aan de graff te gaan, sullende tot voortgangh derselver mede gansch geen tijt noch ijver werden verwaarloost, noch gespaart.
Ende ten opsichte bij onse resolutie mede is geresolveert om de dangereusheijt der plaats ‘t Robbeneijlandt (waar ‘s Comps. vee is weijdende, ‘t selve daarvan af te halen, Soo is bij nader resumtie noch goetgevonden met ‘et afhalen van geseijde vee (om de pregnante redenen die daar toe sijn) te blijven continueeren, mits dat het kleijn vee de schapen en bocken eerst werden afgebracht, en de treckbeesten ‘t alderlaast, als cunnende onderwijl met ‘et schulpen bijeen rijden)116 tot de calckovens noch besig sijn, en of ‘t geviel dat onder ‘t afbrengen van geseijde vee schenen overvallen te sullen werden, ‘t selve ten eersten op ‘t afsienlijcxste te ruijneeren en onbruijckbaar te maken, gelijck mede wijden is overleijdt en goet gekeurt de besettelingen aldaar een bequame chialoup van hier te bestellen om bij noot, off enigh vyand in ‘t sicht crijgende, op ‘t ceijn dat aan haerl. sal geopenbaert werden (is ‘t doenlijck) herwaerts aan te komen en sich alsoo sien te redden, en bij mancquement van goede wint dat haar onmogelyck bevinden met geseijde chialoup het recht herwaarts aan te ontvlieden, ‘t eerste lant ‘t beste te kiesen, en alsdan de chialoup en al ‘t geen tot stijvinge van den vijand dienen mocht, in den brant te steken, en ‘t vee levendigh off doodt herwaarts te brengen, Ende vermits buijten alle apparentie wel te duchten is dat daar wel enige trouwlose sijn, die over sware delicten voor al haar leven of langen tijt op dat eijlant gebannen sijn en ten dien eijnde geen werck souwden maken om hare occasie waar te nemen en de E.Compe. alle afbreuck te doen, als schadelijcke vertichtinge aan den vijand te geven, soo is mede goetgevonden ende seer nootsakelijck geacht, de sodanige, ende die maar enigsints van enige wantrouw suspect mochten wesen, daar van af te nemen ende (is ‘t nodigh) andere in desselffs plaats te statueeren.
Ende aangesien de constitutie van dese wanckelbare tijden niet wel toe te laten dat de vrijluijden (haar met schieten generende) sich van huijs al te diep in ‘t lant begeven dat w’ deselve in noot beswaarlijck soo ras bij den anderen souwden kunnen krijgen, off117 neffens de andere de vereijschte resistentie te bewijsen, Soo is mede goetgevonden om deselve bij een te houwden, en om op het gehoor van haar toegevoegde ceijn in goede ordre te kunnen sijn, het schieten van geseijde wilt aan alle vrijluijden voortaan te ontseggen en verbieden, uijtgesondert den vrijborger en gepriviligeerde traanbrander Willem van Dieden, die sulcx alleen om de redenen van ‘t traanbranden geadmitteert werd, mits dat den selven na de eijlanden gaande, als dan sal werden bijgevoeght ijmant van ‘s Comps. wegen die het vaertuijgh (‘t welck mocht comen mede te nemen) neffens geseijde van Dieden bij overval helpt in den brandt steken, ‘t welcq denselven in volle vergaderingh wel ersntigh sij gerecommandeert, oocq dat alles in die gelegentheijt souwde trachten te vernielen wat immers conde, onder die reserve dat de E.Compe. soo voor de schade van ‘t vaertuijgh als anders die daar voor mocht comen te lijden, volkomentlijck sal instaan.
