Presentibus omnibus.

According to the ordinance, prayed to God, the Council of the Noble Governor of this residence being summoned, and further having the same read aloud, having for their reference all the papers sent to us by our Lords Majors from the Country via the aldermen Ternaten, Oostenburgh, d'Crijgsman, Voorzichtigheijt, Berckme[e]r, and Bloemendael, both from the Assembly of 17 and from the Amsterdam Chamber, dated April 12, 3, and 11 of the year 1998. Thus, the E. Compa. is largely in the service of this. It was decided (after Her Honor had complied with the orders and commands under the circumstances) to pursue them as far as possible; the Honorable Governor, the second in command and captain, having been with the others yesterday, attending to some important matters concerning the fortification of this fortress against some unexpected attention, had long been with the others, and Her Honor had been held up with them most of the day, also on principle to complete the work in progress as quickly as possible and to provide us with all the necessary ammunition.

And seeing that our Lords Majors also do not like to see that their guests who appear here have enjoyed refreshment after the demand, and have again gotten into position to depart, it is of no use to remain here or to deliberate, especially since their Nobility of Batavia would then not only remain deprived of the Company's important advice for a longer period, but also of the common good. to send costly soils elsewhere in the country at any time, Therefore, in view of this and for many other compelling reasons, it has been arrested and established in council, or which will first be prepared to be in good order, weather permitting, to be dispatched at once, and above all, taken into consideration and considered by St. Andries by its Ede. for the Cap, partially equipped, mastless due to the heart attack of a travaet, according to reports from the ship's friends Bergen and Norway, which is said to have been run in, and for which no action has yet been taken and it is beyond our hope that any disaster (which God mercifully forbid)100 might have been met with, like the unfortunate flute St. Laurens, also by her Honor. Our residency has been equipped with new provisions, which has become a major inconvenience to the Cape in these times. This has also made us even more circumspect and very necessary (since we were not assured of the proper arrival of our assigned St. Andries) to take such provisions and necessities as were deemed necessary in these dubious times to support this residency, according to the most accurate and comprehensive estimate, as was also required from the ships, 6,000 lbs. of wood powder as advised:

Ternate 5,600 lbs. containing 2,400 lbs. d' Voorcautigheijt 3100 lb. do. lb. 1200 item.
de Berghmeer 2100 lb. do. lb. 800 item.
Oostenburgh . ... Blank face. lb. do. lb. 1600 item.
Ternate 5600 lb. containing lb. 2400 item.
d' Voorcautigheijt 3100 lb. do. lb. 1200 item.
de Berghmeer 2100 lb. do. lb. 800 item.
Oostenburgh . ... Blank face. lb. do. lb. 1600 item. And furthermore, after inspections, it was discovered to our regret that there were few, if any, noteworthy medications in the medicine chest for this residence. Yes, the chest itself consisted mainly of some dry spices and a few pans, melting pots, and other such paraphernalia, with which we (the medicines not being included after the request) would not be able to save ourselves well in the event of a subtle enemy attack, God forbid. Therefore, we could not have passed up the opportunity to provide ourselves with a fair amount of it, and from these ships of that sort, it is possible to make some predictions, as we believe that, after a guess, it would be in order.

In accordance with the orders of Our Lords Majors from the Netherlands, the 5 chests of money from Oostenburgh were ordered to be collected here for Batavia and distributed among the Batavian ships. It was therefore deemed appropriate to send 3 chests of Ternate and 2 boxes with the Precaution, the aforementioned ships being the most defensive and their authorities being sober persons to whom supervision of the highest order remains highly recommended. And it should be noted that Master Tobijas Vlasvath, fiscal in loco, at the Eden. Mr. Governor has filed a complaint against the bailiff ... 101 that the oath and duty have been so far exceeded that some people, quoted by the aforementioned fiscal in favor of Justice in order to get the naked truth out of it, would have informed and unfaithfully induced the fiscal to have to withhold the truth and so much more than those quoted would have had to add to their report at the examination of commissioners or against the fiscal. n, to thus baffle the Justice Department in its good intentions, this absurd case was very badly received by the Governor and Council, and it was found acceptable for this trip (since no such criminal has ever been accused). The matter was settled in the Political Council and the same with the removal of his office and a demotion to ƒ9 per month from here onwards, with one of the aldermen to be sent, and in his place to substitute Harmen Hacker, who is sober and of good character, also suitable enough to perform this office with greater contentment and loyalty.

And since we have also received various accusations against the present mayor, Jan van den Bergh, regarding the manner in which he himself, during the celebration of God's Holy Word, did not spare him, instead of leading by example as was his duty, by going to pubs, playing cards, and getting drunk indecently, and then, being full and drunk, to bastine honest people without foundation, implicitly and unexpectedly, with his mayor's rat, etc., as can be seen in some declaration lodged here with the Secretariat, and deposited by consonant witnesses, besides much other vile malice which he himself commits against newcomers on a daily basis, these enormities of the aforementioned The commander cannot leave the commander unpunished, but has seen fit to discharge him from his duties and furthermore to send him away with the ships, and to recommend to the fiscal officer present that he should, if necessary, try to find a more suitable person among the garrison or on the ships.

Lastly, as the Honorable Governor has been informed, also to the great displeasure of the Company's security guards, that a Hottenoth has refrained from carrying a rifle in the country and from shooting coarse guns, to the great prejudice of the said security guards and especially of the Company. there is healing, without one being able to know for certain who would have acquired a rifle, and would still be daily supplied with powder and shot (to carry out their unauthorized actions). And to investigate such highly forbidden insolence as accurately as possible, as to get the offenders into our hands in order to take legal action against them after due consideration, as this is a matter that could subsequently cause great inconvenience to the E. Compe and other residents. Therefore, it was first considered good and entirely necessary to set a premium on this and to absolutely authorize the aforementioned guards to try to the best of their ability to capture the said Hottenoth and deliver them up to us; and if within a few days we cannot obtain the aforementioned Africans, to publish a memorandum of this, and to inform the general public, and no one except those of our opinion, of such information as will be available in due time.102

Thus done and arrested in the Fort of Good Hope on the day and year aforesaid.
