Presentibus omnibus.
Regarding Costi, some Hottentoots, in the name of and on behalf of their superior Gonnema and Odossoa, have again been sent to the Honourable Governor of this residence, stating that Gonnema and his corals had approached the Berghrevier about a quarter of an hour on the favourable side, and had meanwhile collapsed there (because they could not easily pass through due to the abundant water of the said river), and that he was very surprised (according to the advice of his envoys) that we did not come to meet him with some merchandise and to make an exchange, adding that they, on their part, had not hesitated to send several envoys here to make everything to Sam Sam, that is, peace. to contribute, and if none of our own should appear, he would not be inclined to approach him for fear of mistrust, so he now also requested (since they were already so near) that some of our own should come there, namely, only on this side of the Berghrevier, and when this was heard, they would then contribute all of them to come over to us and deal amicably with the others, and then he himself would personally proceed with us to the Cape to congratulate the great captain. And considering that nation itself to be entirely distrustful and of a false nature, to consider another to be neither fickle nor much more cunning, as well as now quite fearful (if we did not appear) that something evil might be about to happen, as has become increasingly apparent, and through those vain imaginations they might easily deviate and move further inland, to the considerable prejudice of the E.Compa. and no small effort to bring them back here again, So this matter was taken seriously into consideration by the Governor and Council, and Lieutenant Jeronimus Cruse, being an old countryman, and not unaware of the nature of that doubtful nation, asked whether it would also be difficult to send some people there and show us seriousness, whereupon his E. replied that the same with the Gonnema would now have to be serious, and that there was not much to be feared for it, and therefore at her invitation it was of necessity done once again, presenting his E. his affection and service for the E. Compe. to want to go there in person myself, with the expectation that first of all not only a reasonable exchange with that nation would be made for the European Company, but also to persuade them over the large river closer to the fort with its corals to make a more accommodating and less expensive exchange for the European Company, and to have Gonnema himself come to the fort in person. So (after good consultation and various debates on one side and the other, the true service of the E. Company is esteemed to have the aforementioned lieutenant, according to his E. request, fully provided for such necessities, and, being thus provided for and capable, to let the sargeant Oeloff, 2 corporals and 18 soldiers leave this fortress tomorrow evening 1994 to assemble the people at the roundabout Keer de Koe and spend the night there, and to proceed in good order on the day after, it being understood that the said lieutenant, appearing there, will wait for its people on this side of the Berghrevier (if possible) and not lightly attempt to cross over in everything to be sure and not to accustom the nation to it, as the E. Company is freer to barter closer to the fort than further inland with greater consumption.
Furthermore, since many of these free inhabitants (who want to embarrass them here with the shooting of manatees and other coarse things) have hesitated for some time here, because of the vile murders of the treacherous Hottentoots, to go deep into the country in this way to seek their food, that is, with shooting manatees and other things, and have at least recently entered into a good peace with the Gonnema nation (as if they did not know better); This occasion was also understood as such freemen, as several have already requested, to have the messenger announce that in the Company of Lieutenant Cruse, as mentioned, was granted permission to join, both to reinforce the troops and otherwise; to go shooting near the Berghrevier (where such heavy fire is prohibited), as this is very necessary here for the benefit of the Comptroller's servants and serfs.

Companion.
Since for some time now we have learned, through various complaints by the free residents of this residence, that sheep theft has been going on here for quite some time, albeit covertly and bravely, and that, according to all appearances, it can only be presumed that this has principally been taking refuge among the sheep watchers themselves, as has recently become apparent to our great displeasure through the freeholder Mattijs Lammertsz, 's Comps. detainee, who not only with his knowledge took another's sheep into his flock and allowed them to graze there, without having reported them, but also allowed them to be lugged and mentioned, under the frivolous pretext of having done so by mistake and in obscurity, regardless of the fact that in the year 1670 various edicts were issued to the late Commander Pieter Hackius and Councillor against such thefts and theft of one of the other's cattle95 and he himself was not ignorant of that prohibition. It is therefore deemed highly necessary by the Governor and Councillor to provide for this in a timely manner (as much as possible), and the aforementioned. to have the place renovated again and to be so amplified with such a paper for the counter-venteurs contained therein as will come to dictate it, especially always to have it influenced that all and every one shall be obliged immediately without delay, if it is noticed that a strange sheep is among his flock, to bring it to Comps. Coorenschuir or here in the coral, or, in case of necessity and lack of time, the shepherd being alone in the field and not daring to let his own or his master's cattle graze alone for so long, then coming home in the evening, to count it accurately and, if strange sheep are found among their own, to count them as above, to be declared that very night and stored in advance, so that the rightful owner may again obtain his property there.
Thus resolved and arrested in the Fort of Good Hope on the day and year aforesaid.

Ende ingesien die natie selfs gansch wantrouwigh en van een valschen inborst sijnde, voor vast houden een ander noch ongestadigen en veel slimmer te sijn, als mede nu al vrij beducht (wanneer wij niet te voorschijn quamen) dat iets quaets mochten voorhebben, gelijck Godt betert, wel meer gebleken is, en door die ijdele imaginatien lichtelijck mochten afwijcken en wederom verder landtwaert in trecken, tot mercklijcke prejuditie van de E.Compa. en geen cleijne moeijte van deselve wederom herwaarts te animeeren, Soo is dese saeck bij den Gouverneur en Raadt in serieuse opmerckinge genoomen en den luijtenant Jeronimus Cruse, een out landtganger sijnde, en den aert dier twijffelmoedige natie niet onbewust, afgevraagt off oock swarigheijt soude maeken om eenigh volcq daarheen te senden en onsen ernst te betoonen, des repliceerde sijn E. ‘t selve met de Gonnema nu wel ernst te sullen sijn, en daar voor niet veel voor te duchten was, en dierhalven op hare nodiginge wel nootsaeckelijck daar een keer na toe gedaan diende, presenterende sijn E. sijn affexie en dienst voor d’ E.Compe. om selfs in persoon daar heen te willen gaan met vermoeden van vooreerst niet alleen een tamelijcke ruijlinge met die natie voor d’ E.Compa. te sullen doen, maar oock deselve oven de groote revier nader aen ‘t fort met haar coraelen tot een accomodabelder en onkostelijcker ruijlinge voor d’ E.Compa te bewegen en Gonnema selfs in persoon aan ‘t fort te doen komen. Soo is (na goet overlegh en verscheijde debatten van ‘t een en ‘t ander den waren dienst van d’ E.Compa. geacht voors. luijtenandt volgens sijn E. versoeck van soodanige behoeften daar toe benodigende ten vollen te laten versorgen, en des versorgt sijnde en bequaam weder met den sargeandt Oeloff, 2 corporaels en 18 soldaten morgen avondt94 uijt dese fortresse te laten trecken om aan de ronduijt de Keer de Koe ‘t volcq bij een te vergaderen en te vernachten en voort op komen van den dagh wijder daar na toe in goede ordre rijs te vorderen, wel verstaande dat geseijde luijtenandt, aldaar verschijnende, aan dese kandt de Berghrevier (is ‘t doenlijck) haarluijden sal afwachten en niet lichtelijck tragten over te gaan om in alles seker te gaan en die natie daar niet aan te gewennen, als sijnde d’ E.Compa. vrij gereder dicht aan ‘t fort als wijt in ‘t landt met grooter consumtie te ruijlen.
Voorts vermits veele deser vrije ingesetenen (die haar met ‘et schieten van zeekoeijen en ander groff wilt alhier erneenen) eenigen tijt herwaarts door de vuijle moorderijen der verradelijcken Hottentoots hebben geschroomt om diep in ‘t landt op die wijse haar cost, dat is met zeeko[e]ijen en ander wilt te schieten, te gaan soecken, en altans met die Gonnemase natie (soo als niet beter weten) een goede vrede nu jongst hebben aangegaen; Soo wert bij de occasie mede verstaan alsulcke vrijluijden, gelijck verscheijde alreets versocht hebben, door de bode te laten aandienen dat in Compa. van den luijtenandt Cruse opgemelt, soo om den troep te verstercken als anders, werden gelicentieert mede te mogen gaan; om bij off omtrent de Berghrevier (waar sulck groff wilt sigh is onthoudende) te moogen gaan schieten alsoo het selve hier mede tot voetsel van ‘s Comps. dienaren en lijffeijgenen seer nodigh is.
Wijders is mede in Rade g’arresteert op morgen na ‘t eijndigen van d’ executie bij een te convoceeren den Raadt van Justitie, gesterckt met de Borgerraden en den ouden provisioneelen fiscaal Gerbrandt Mulder voor sijne gedaene dienst aan de Justitie te bedancken ende daar van te ontslaen ende den nieuwen officier Mr. Tobias Vlasvath in die functie (alvoorens den eedt daartoe staande, gedaan hebbende) te introduceeren mitsgaders soo de Raden van Justitie te weten Comps. dienaars als de borgerraden serieuselijck te recommandeeren als mede de andere dienaars der Justitie, sijn E. in sijne nieuwe functie in alle voorvallen de behulpsame handt te bieden, sijnde sijn E. voor tractement reets toegevoegt maendelijcx acht lichte realen, ses kannen wijn en daar benevens soo veel branthoudt en traan tot licht als van d’ E.Compa. bevoorens sij genooten.
Vermits nu tsedert eenigen tijt herwaarts bij diverse aanclachten van de vrije ingesetenen deser residentie t’ onser kennisse gekomen is, hoe dat de schapendieverije een geruijmen tijt herwaarts alhier, hoe wel bedectelijck dapper in swangh gegaan heeft, ende na alle apparentie niet anders te presumeeren staet als dat sulcx ten principaele onder de schaapwagters selffs is schuijlende, gelijck nu jongst noch tot ons groot misnoegen is komen te blijcken, bij den vrijborgen Mattijs Lammertsz, ‘s Comps. gedetineerde, de welcke niet alleen met sijne kennisse eens anders schapen heeft onder sijne troup genoomen en gedoogt daar bij te weijden, sonder deselve te hebben aangegeven, maar oock onderstaan deselve te lubben en vermercken, onder frivool pretext van sulcx abusivelijck en in der duijster te sijn geschiet, ongeacht in den jaare 1670 bij den E. oudt Commandeur Pieter Hackius, saliger, en Raadt om soodanige dieverijen en ontvreemdinge van d’ een d’ anders vee diverse placcaten sijn g’emandeert95 en den selven van dat verbodt niet ignorant is geweest, Soo is bij den Gouverneur en Raadt hoogh nodigh g’acht (soo veel doenlijck) daarin tijdigh te versien, en voors. placcaet wederom te doen renoveeren en soodanigh te amplieeren met alsulcke peene voor de contraventeurs daarin vervath als het selve sal comen te dicteeren, specialijck altijt in ‘t selve te laten influeeren dat alle ende een ijder sal gehouden wesen aanstondts sonder uijtstel soo wanneer gewaer werdt een vreemt schaap onder sijn troep te sijn, deselve aan Comps.coorenschuir ofte alhier in de coraal te brengen, ofte bij noot en gebrecq van tijt de hoeder alleen in ‘t velt sijnde en sijn eijgen of sijn meesters vee soo langh niet durvende alleen laten weijden, alsdan t’ avonts thuijs komende, deselve naeuwkeurigh na te tellen en bij bevindinghe van vreemde schapen onder de hare, deselve als boven, dieeijgen96 nacht aan te geven en in voors. stallinge te bergen, ten eijnde den rechten eijgenaer ‘t sijne aldaar wederom sal mogen erlangen.

Wijders is mede in Rade g’arresteert op morgen na ‘t eijndigen van d’ executie bij een te convoceeren den Raadt van Justitie, gesterckt met de Borgerraden en den ouden provisioneelen fiscaal Gerbrandt Mulder voor sijne gedaene dienst aan de Justitie te bedancken ende daar van te ontslaen ende den nieuwen officier Mr. Tobias Vlasvath in die functie (alvoorens den eedt daartoe staande, gedaan hebbende) te introduceeren mitsgaders soo de Raden van Justitie te weten Comps. dienaars als de borgerraden serieuselijck te recommandeeren als mede de andere dienaars der Justitie, sijn E. in sijne nieuwe functie in alle voorvallen de behulpsame handt te bieden, sijnde sijn E. voor tractement reets toegevoegt maendelijcx acht lichte realen, ses kannen wijn en daar benevens soo veel branthoudt en traan tot licht als van d’ E.Compa. bevoorens sij genooten.
Vermits nu tsedert eenigen tijt herwaarts bij diverse aanclachten van de vrije ingesetenen deser residentie t’ onser kennisse gekomen is, hoe dat de schapendieverije een geruijmen tijt herwaarts alhier, hoe wel bedectelijck dapper in swangh gegaan heeft, ende na alle apparentie niet anders te presumeeren staet als dat sulcx ten principaele onder de schaapwagters selffs is schuijlende, gelijck nu jongst noch tot ons groot misnoegen is komen te blijcken, bij den vrijborgen Mattijs Lammertsz, ‘s Comps. gedetineerde, de welcke niet alleen met sijne kennisse eens anders schapen heeft onder sijne troup genoomen en gedoogt daar bij te weijden, sonder deselve te hebben aangegeven, maar oock onderstaan deselve te lubben en vermercken, onder frivool pretext van sulcx abusivelijck en in der duijster te sijn geschiet, ongeacht in den jaare 1670 bij den E. oudt Commandeur Pieter Hackius, saliger, en Raadt om soodanige dieverijen en ontvreemdinge van d’ een d’ anders vee diverse placcaten sijn g’emandeert95 en den selven van dat verbodt niet ignorant is geweest, Soo is bij den Gouverneur en Raadt hoogh nodigh g’acht (soo veel doenlijck) daarin tijdigh te versien, en voors. placcaet wederom te doen renoveeren en soodanigh te amplieeren met alsulcke peene voor de contraventeurs daarin vervath als het selve sal comen te dicteeren, specialijck altijt in ‘t selve te laten influeeren dat alle ende een ijder sal gehouden wesen aanstondts sonder uijtstel soo wanneer gewaer werdt een vreemt schaap onder sijn troep te sijn, deselve aan Comps.coorenschuir ofte alhier in de coraal te brengen, ofte bij noot en gebrecq van tijt de hoeder alleen in ‘t velt sijnde en sijn eijgen of sijn meesters vee soo langh niet durvende alleen laten weijden, alsdan t’ avonts thuijs komende, deselve naeuwkeurigh na te tellen en bij bevindinghe van vreemde schapen onder de hare, deselve als boven, dieeijgen96 nacht aan te geven en in voors. stallinge te bergen, ten eijnde den rechten eijgenaer ‘t sijne aldaar wederom sal mogen erlangen.
Aldus geresolveert en g’arresteert in ‘t Fort de Goede Hoop ten dage en jaare voors.
