After the ordinary prayer, the Council, summoned by the Governor and having been advised by his Honour, suggested that it would be expedient to allow the ships Soesdijck and Wester Amstel to complete their voyage to Batavia after the departure of the return fleet. The Blaeuwen Hulcq, which arrived here on 9 March, apparently lost its mainmast en route. It is still to be maintained here to make as much repair as possible. His Honour's proposal has been duly noted, and it is noted that the aforementioned transposed [substrate] will still require some time for its repair. Most importantly, in the interests of the Honourable Company, the letters have been approved for their Honour. to requisition the Batavia naval authorities and to send them, along with the aforementioned two ships, to Her Honor in return.
The Governor, furthermore, having asked the Commander whether anything could be prevented from departing, replied that His Honor was satisfied that they were now ready to depart, as well as that they had been provided with ammunition of war and other necessities. This was only requested individually, also on behalf of all the skippers. This could be provided with a small drink, with the promise that the aforementioned skippers would... all the same (to keep a good eye on the Company's precious ships) will be made worthwhile. We have therefore deemed it very useful and helpful, in accordance with the previous regarding the departure of the ships, to consult further after noon in the presence of all skippers, and to find out nothing that is lacking or needs to be supplemented; and regarding the petition for the drink, being soberly provided, we cannot really excuse it, but we find it good and understand it, as happened last year and more often here, on the condition, however, that everyone will take good care of their ship for their own. As much as possible, combined for everyone's assistance, to take from the Batavian cargo of the ships moored here nine barrels, to be distributed to each ship according to the older custom, and for the Commander and Flag Captain154 who suffers more offense, a surcharge of Zirean skein.155
Lastly, because the brandy tappers very strongly insist that white brandy cannot possibly be sold without red brandy, considering that the common man, for the sake of good business, mostly sells red brandy, and the Company, being a producer of red brandy, remains unable to keep it going with that liquor, and therefore requested a slight reduction in the price, The aforementioned tappers could not readily refuse their request, but to their satisfaction, in order to be able to more adequately raise their rent (without making any pretense), it was agreed to pay the cellar brandy to the E. Company in lieu of 30 Rijxd. after this day by 156:28, when the time came to supply red brandy again, and the said tappers could be supplied by us.
Thus done and passed in the Fort of Good Hope on the day and year aforesaid.
