By the resolution below on the 20th May, passed by the Ship Council of the galyot, the Red Fox on her return from here to Madagascar, having seen that her chief boatswain Baltes Jansz had abandoned her chief boatswain Baltes Jansz for their own inconvenience and other serious reasons and in that place once again surrogated a Hendrick Cloetas van Lubecq, bossr., as can be seen in the copy below, in words as follows:

'On Woonsdach the 20th of May 1654.'

'We also note, to our great knowledge, that on several occasions since our departure from the Taeffel Bay of the Caep de Boa Esperance to Madagascar, we have High Boatswain Baltes Jansz van Hoorn, after many admonitions and warnings given to him, in his duty to the E. Compe. according to his duty, is obliged to carry out, but to the contrary, if he is ordered from his head concerning shipwork or to command the crew to do the same, then the first to oppose it, and it is strong and well enough, and immediately goes to shelters where we should present ourselves, in which we would find ourselves greatly deceived at last, as now last on the 18th of this month a heavy storm occurred, so that he, as mentioned before, would see to it that everything was clear and strong, so that in time of need he might use it according to our will, which was the safety of our ship and property, but because of his great inattention the clew of the mainsail (due to a defect that had not been properly provided for) ended up in a broken brackish position, our boat was being tacked about by the wind and we nearly lost it, whereby two men were also seriously injured, we also ran the great risk of losing our mast through the violent rolling, and which would then (God forbid) have turned out sadly and to the great detriment of the E. Compe. and the common good, also the aforementioned Baltes Jansz is completely unfit to perform the duties of high boatswain because he has no knowledge whatsoever of properly drilling a stuck rope, but the same has been to the great detriment of the E. Compe. our Lords Masters to their destruction and disgrace, also has no Command, or relief among the general, So it is that we, the undersigned chiefs of the galyot (God forbid) called the Red Fox, having considered the matter, at the service of the E. Compe. to prevent (as much as possible) all further disasters, hereby appoint in place of the aforementioned Baltes Jansz the person of Hendrick Cloetas van Lubecq, forest shooter, to officially serve the high boatswain provisionally, being a capable, sober and faithful servant (as one might not otherwise notice) of the E. Compe. to maintain a good overview, relief, and command of the people, all of which was done upon the approval of the E. Commander Johan van Riebeecq, to whom we further submit.

"Thus resolved in the galyot the Red Fox on the day and year as above, sailing at an altitude of ... degrees, ... minutes, and was signed.158"

Thus done, approved, and confirmed in the Fort de Goede Hoope on the date and year as above.
