After invoking God's most holy Name, the Governor presents to the Council how the tenants of the Cape brewed beer, or the brewing, together with Jannetje Ferdinandus and Barbertje Geens, have demonstrated how they are currently still unable, due to the lack of hops and sufficient other grains, to set up the brewing and selling of the aforementioned beers, but because of which it has now completely fallen into disrepair, also resulting in their inability to raise and pay the agreed rent to the Reverend Company, regardless of their rights both from the Reverend Mr. and Mrs. Goske, as well as from the Noble Mr. Commissioner N. Verburgh has been granted a considerable reduction in response to her iterative complaints. After due deliberation, we have decided to accommodate the said tenants in this matter (so as not to completely frustrate E. Compa. of those monies) and to strictly prohibit the tapping of sugar beers in general, and to grant this not only to the said tenants, for the relief and raising of the said rent money, but also to such poor (sic) and destitute people, widows and orphans, as they believe are in the service of E. Compa. and according to Christian duty, as we have consequently nominated the widow. of the citizen Thielman Hendricx, a poor and needy widow, as well as the three minor mother and fatherless children of Geertruijt Mentings, youngest wife of the freeman Joannes Pretorius, to allow them to continue tapping the aforementioned beer until the end of this current year.
The freeman Willem Willemsz of Deventer in the year 1672, having shot down a man from the nearby Hottentoot coral here, in order to escape punishment, embarked for the fatherland on the Danish return ship Magolos on 4 May, and later in the year 1673 on the ship Europa, among a larger number of freemen, appearing here and repeatedly showing some petition concerning the fact perpetrated by him here, and (according to his statement) presented by himself to His Highness the Lord Prince of Orange in the army at Swammerdam on 22 October 1673. 1672, the apostil in substance stated that His Highness would deem it good to inform the Commandant in person of the fact and transcribe his report, considerations, and advice, as well as the supplementary land reclamation granted in the meantime and security of the body,97 as if the Noble Lord Governor and Council here, for various wise98 considerations, had finally deemed it good to place him provisionally on Robbenejlandt, and because of the aforementioned matter concerning the fatherland, to advise the assembly of the Lords Seventeen on how they should conduct themselves therein, as indeed happened, and in retraction received from the aforementioned assembly, according to the letter dated May 12, 1674, concerning the aforementioned Willem Willemsz, that we would send him with his wife and children to Mauritius, to have him escrounged there as a freeman, but the same was postponed until then because the wife of the aforementioned Willem Willemsz could not get rid of his real estate by hand, as well as subsequently to her Honorable. Letter dated September 28, 1675, kindly instructs us in this matter, with the aforementioned. Willem Willemsz will have to act as we would judge to be in his and the E. Compa.'s best interest, and the latter has been residing on Robben Island until recently, which had to be sent from there to be cured of his illness at the water's edge, and his wife did not spare any attention during his absence to very rashly commit fornication and to procreate with a certain bailiff named Ocker Cornelisz, having two children, and as you know, I can in no way understand the aforementioned. man to live in peace (regardless of whether she had previously requested to us that she and her aforementioned husband might unite again together) but at present requested that she rather be placed in the spinning house, as to comply with this, so this matter was taken into consideration and notice, in view of the man, to prevent all further removal concerning the Hottentoots, found good, the aforementioned Willem Willemsz and his wife, but each separately, to go to Batavia and there they be placed in the spinning house according to her request, also during her stay here, the aforementioned. Pol Ocker Cornelisz will be bound to properly support the aforementioned two children whom he begot out of wedlock by the aforementioned Willem Willemsz wife until the time they both departed to Robben Island, and when he returns.that, in the meantime, until the time of her departure, the children married between her and her aforementioned husband will receive maintenance from citizen Jan Coenraed Visser, as his grandfather and, consequently, the closest relative.
Furthermore, considering that the E. Company is currently free of livestock, both to accommodate passing ships from the homeland and those from India, as required, primarily due to the death, injury, and killing of lions and other wild animals, as the livestock population here cannot in any way meet the large amount of food that usually occurs there, being the E. Company. here also particularly necessary for the continuation of the new fortification, a good number of trenches, as well as which we cannot provide, by other means than by land expeditions, will be able to be obtained. So, after the previous deliberation and on the invitation that the commander of the Hosiquas, by a certain captain of the Essequas named Claas, has sent to us, and the hope that the last (of a considerable revolt to obtine) has given us, and that the said nation to that end had already come to safety ... 101 days' journey from Hottentoots Holland, found good and understood to send a dispatch there (especially since that nation was very well provided with the necessary cattle and to (showing their very goodwill) with such merchants as are required and desired, and the overseer in Hottentoot Holland, Laurens Visser, will be appointed to handle the transaction, with the addition of another 24 experienced landowners at his assistance.102
The orphans of this residence in Rade have survived and exhibited a distribution made by our order in their council of the immovable property and mortgaged debts belonging to the estate of Thielman Hendricxsz, a citizen of this place during his lifetime, as yet undivided and accruing, according to valuation, at a sum of ƒ2,550:-:-, namely ƒ1,150:-:- for immovable property and ƒ1400:-:- in sealed letters of custodianship, speaking against citizen Jan Mostaert, and acquisition of the estate called De Uijtwijck, still being hijacked on the same, of which ƒ2550:-:- the judicial half of the heirs of the aforementioned Thielman Hendricxsz the late and the spouse of the E. Compa. mixed with the fiscal portion, about confiscation in which the widow of the aforementioned Thielman was subsequently sentenced by the Council of Justice here on December 8, 1673,103 competing, and thus remaining unseparated for a long time, with a request to choose one or other part from it. So, after the previous conference of the aforementioned two equivalents, in favor of the heirs, to accept the aforementioned debt of ƒ1400 separately for the E. Compa. voor present sich vrij destituijt van beestiael is bevindende, soo om de passeerende schepen uijt het vaderlandt als die uijt India na vereijsch daarmede te connen accommodeeren, wel ten principaelen ontstaende, door ‘t afsterven, verongelucken en ombrengen van de leeuwen en ander wilt gedierte, aangesien den aanteelt van ‘t vee alhier, geensints kan komen op te haelen de groote consumptie die daar doorgaans geschiet, wesende d’ E. Compa. hier mede bijsonderlijck noch wel benoodigt tot voortsettinge van de nieuwe fortificatie, goede nombre treckossen, mitsgaders wij niet connen voorsien, door andere middelen als met landttogten te laten doen, sullen te bemagtigen wesen, Soo is na voorgaende deliberatie en op de uijtnodingh die den overste van de Hosiquas, door seecker capteijn van de Essequas genaamt Claas, aan ons heeft laten doen, en d’ hoop die ons den laa[t]sten (van een considerable reuijlinge t’ obtineenen) heeft gegeven, en dat de gemelte natie tot dien eijnde reets tot ongevaar …101 dagen reijsens van Hottentoots Hollandt waren comen afsacken, goet gevonden en verstaen een besendinghe derwaarts te doen (te meer alsoo die natie van ‘t benodigde vee seer ruijm versien en tot ruijlen haar seer genegen toonen) met alsulcke coopmanschappen als daar toe vereijschen en best begeert sijn, mitsgaders tot ‘et verhandelen van dien sal werden gestelt den opsiender in Hottentoots Hollandt , Laurens Visser, met bijvoegingh van noch 24 ervaren landtgangens t’ sijnder assistentie.102
Bij weesmeesteren deser residentie in Rade overgelevent en vertoont sijnde seeker repartitie op onse ordre in haar collegie gemaeckt van de vaste goederen en gehypothequeerde schulden die den boedel van Thielman Hendricxsz saligen, in sijn leven borger te deser plaatse, voor als noch onverdeelt was possideerende en toecomende volgens taxatie begroot op een somma van ƒ2550:-:- te weeten aan vaste goederen, ƒ1150:-:- en ƒ1400:-:- aan besegelde custinghbrieven, ten laste van den borger Jan Mostaert spreekende, en overcoop van ‘t landtgoet den Uijtwijck genaamt, noch op ‘t selve gehijpothequeert sijnde, van welcke ƒ2550:-:- de gerechte helfte d’ erfgenaamen van voors. Thielman Hendricxsz saliger en de wederhelft d’ E. Compa. gemengt met des fiscaals portie, over confiscatie waarin de weduwe van meergemelte Thielman achtervolgens sententie bij den Raadt van Justitie in dato 8 December ao. 1673 alhier gecondemneert,103 is competerende, en duslangh ongescheijden gebleven, met versoeck daar uijt ‘t een of andere deel te willen kiesen, Soo is na voorgaande conferentie van voors. twee equivalenten, in faveur van de erfgenamen g’arresteert de voors. schult van ƒ1400 voor d’ E. Compa. voor present sich vrij destituijt van beestiael is bevindende, soo om de passeerende schepen uijt het vaderlandt als die uijt India na vereijsch daarmede te connen accommodeeren, wel ten principaelen ontstaende, door ‘t afsterven, verongelucken en ombrengen van de leeuwen en ander wilt gedierte, aangesien den aanteelt van ‘t vee alhier, geensints kan komen op te haelen de groote consumptie die daar doorgaans geschiet, wesende d’ E. Compa. hier mede bijsonderlijck noch wel benoodigt tot voortsettinge van de nieuwe fortificatie, goede nombre treckossen, mitsgaders wij niet connen voorsien, door andere middelen als met landttogten te laten doen, sullen te bemagtigen wesen, Soo is na voorgaende deliberatie en op de uijtnodingh die den overste van de Hosiquas, door seecker capteijn van de Essequas genaamt Claas, aan ons heeft laten doen, en d’ hoop die ons den laa[t]sten (van een considerable reuijlinge t’ obtineenen) heeft gegeven, en dat de gemelte natie tot dien eijnde reets tot ongevaar …101 dagen reijsens van Hottentoots Hollandt waren comen afsacken, goet gevonden en verstaen een besendinghe derwaarts te doen (te meer alsoo die natie van ‘t benodigde vee seer ruijm versien en tot ruijlen haar seer genegen toonen) met alsulcke coopmanschappen als daar toe vereijschen en best begeert sijn, mitsgaders tot ‘et verhandelen van dien sal werden gestelt den opsiender in Hottentoots Hollandt , Laurens Visser, met bijvoegingh van noch 24 ervaren landtgangens t’ sijnder assistentie.102
Bij weesmeesteren deser residentie in Rade overgelevent en vertoont sijnde seeker repartitie op onse ordre in haar collegie gemaeckt van de vaste goederen en gehypothequeerde schulden die den boedel van Thielman Hendricxsz saligen, in sijn leven borger te deser plaatse, voor als noch onverdeelt was possideerende en toecomende volgens taxatie begroot op een somma van ƒ2550:-:- te weeten aan vaste goederen, ƒ1150:-:- en ƒ1400:-:- aan besegelde custinghbrieven, ten laste van den borger Jan Mostaert spreekende, en overcoop van ‘t landtgoet den Uijtwijck genaamt, noch op ‘t selve gehijpothequeert sijnde, van welcke ƒ2550:-:- de gerechte helfte d’ erfgenaamen van voors. Thielman Hendricxsz saliger en de wederhelft d’ E. Compa. gemengt met des fiscaals portie, over confiscatie waarin de weduwe van meergemelte Thielman achtervolgens sententie bij den Raadt van Justitie in dato 8 December ao. 1673 alhier gecondemneert,103 is competerende, en duslangh ongescheijden gebleven, met versoeck daar uijt ‘t een of andere deel te willen kiesen, Soo is na voorgaande conferentie van voors. twee equivalenten, in faveur van de erfgenamen g’arresteert de voors. schult van ƒ1400 voor d’ E. Compa. en des fiscus aanpart aan te neemen, ende d’ vaste goederen de voors. erven (als daarmede om den landtbouw voort te setten best gedient sijnde) voor haar portie te laten behouden.
Aldus geresolveert en g’arresteert in ‘t Fort de Goede Hoop ten dage en jaare voors.
