Noting that the chiefs of the present English ship, the Phoenix, since their departure from England, have become mastless about 300 miles east of the Cape by an encountered storm or cyclone, and the desolate constitution of which they have presented to the Lord Governor, as well as of the said various voyages have requested in polite terms that she be provided with some masts, gunwales and provisions for the restoration of the said. ship in return for grateful payment, which had been excused by His E. on his own account, with notification to our friends that one of our main ships, the St. Lawrence, equipped with all kinds of materials such as masts, lime, stone for this Government, had sailed and remained on Ilha d'Maij to our great inconvenience due to misunderstandings among seafarers, and that as a result we ourselves remained frustrated. However, the aforementioned chiefs were immediately detained because of their impetuous request, and finally the impossibility of their departure from here was demonstrated, especially if they were not equipped with one or two mastheads, or at least suitable pieces for the cheeks, in order to save them as much as possible. Thus it was finally possible to get rid of these strange guests in their haste, and to avoid all contradiction and misinterpretation. In Council (after mature deliberation) the aforementioned was approved. However, the nation in the surrounding forests, through our instructions, could invent and cut, with our assistance, such masts or pieces of wood as might be required for the repair and relief of their decommissioned ship, with the understanding, however, that the provision and accommodation provided will be appreciated by the Governor and the Council according to the calculation made, and for the same, they request approval due to some needs that have arisen from the loss of the much-desired St. Lawrence.
Regarding the refreshments such as sheep, vegetables, etc., their To grant a note according to previous custom, to have the free residents here make use of their cash at their discretion, provided that the common guarantors report to the secretary daily to declare their delivery.
Thus done and passed at the Fort of Good Hope on the day and year aforesaid.
