Council Meeting of Fort de Goede Hope, convened by order of Admiral Nicolaes Verburch,48 reinforced by the Night Sheriff Joost Clant,49 and the merchants Joan Putmans,50 and Bartholt Sonhuis.51

In this Council, having been made known by the aforementioned Admiral, and having

read aloud the Commission granted by the High Government of India to the inspection of the Cape Government, it is respectfully accepted, and it is understood that His Honor will be authorized tomorrow, February 6, with the proper solemnities, and the people will be presented, with which Mr. Governor Isbrand Goske, along with the other Council members, is entirely in agreement, despite His Eminence expressly stipulating that he would not be a Commissioner subject to his appointment in the country during his reign here.

Furthermore, it has been deemed appropriate for the aldermen 't Huijs te Spijck and Prince Willem, who had been stationed here for some time and were thus detained for the security of this place, to deliver their dispatches to Batavia within 4 or 5 days, as well as to send the Aardenburgh to Ceylon as soon as possible.

And since the fiscal of the return fleet, Mr. Pieter de Neijn (who, by resolution of the Broad Council of December 5th, 1952, was held, due to his deteriorating life, provisionally outside the Council and to serve in that capacity) was still deemed unfit to hold the same office with propriety. It was agreed to substitute in his place the merchant and former fiscal of the Custodian, Bartholt Sonhius.

Thus done and resolved at Fort de Goede Hope on the date and year as above; signed N. VERBURCH, ISBRAND GOSKE, BAX g. v. HERENTALS, JOOST CLANT, JOAN PUTMANS, J. B. SONHIUS, H. CRUDOP, and LAMB. de GROOT. Sect.
