English translation

Notwithstanding the course of action drawn up by Mr. Adriaen Roothaes as regulations for ships destined directly from here to Ceylon,133 which among other things affirms that the winds along the east cusp of Africa and in the waters around it blow fresh from the SW and WSW from the middle of March until late October, and therefore the ships sailing towards it were ordered to direct their course within the mainland of Africa and the great island of Madagascar towards Ceylon or the coasts of India, although various people, in the aforementioned Having attempted their journey along that route during the monsoon, they found the opposite, and frequently encountered variable, as well as northeasterly,134 winds calmly and strongly flowing around the south-flowing currents.

Just as the little fluyt, the Flying Swan, recently sailed from here across the Bay of Os Medos de Cura on June 18th, along this steady coast to Coffala, despite all their detours and seamanship, they encountered such adverse weather in that passage that, after two months of wandering, they were unable to advance further than Punte Primiere 135, and had to turn back, after having previously, in that short time, sailed 20 miles. stem136 and 13 times with the ships together, by God's grace, have lain with the wind, besides that it is also fully known how adverse a voyage the entire fleet under the flag of Lord Laresse137, destined for Mosambique, had, and like others, was no longer able to come up; on the other hand, it being considered that the ships of Batavia at all times of the year, outside Sumatra, through the SE. The trade was running in the westerly winds, not only to sail successfully to Cape Comorin and from there to Ceylon, but also, if necessary, to reach all the way to Goa, besides that this waterway is much less perilous than that along the African coast and safer to navigate. This made it difficult for the ship Rheenen to be ordered to conduct the voyage according to the aforementioned course of action.

Therefore, taking all this into consideration, having passed away and been consulted, primarily in the service of the E. Compe. resolved and understood, to prefer the last route, and that according to the chiefs of Rheenen, in the sailing order to be drawn up, it will be ordered and prescribed, to sail with the west wind from here east to a longitude of 96 degrees and from there through the South Ote pass to the North, above the island of Diego Gracie and east of St. Brendan, as far as to make a stand with broad sheets and to the west the Maldives will pass between 9 and 10 degrees. to be able to pass, and furthermore, having boarded Cape Comorin, to proceed to the inner bend below Tutucorin and anchor there. Furthermore, they will follow the orders given to them there, as well as that the ships Europa and Ter Goes, both also destined for Ceylon, will be recommended to make the journey as stated above.138

Thus resolved at the Fort of Good Hope on the day and year of the aforesaid.
