Hear the report of the commissioners who, pursuant to the authorization, by resolution of Passo 27, had this morning held a conference with some freemen concerning the transport of rock stones and other materials required for the construction of the new castle, and who refused to heed the presentations made by the aforementioned commissioners to that effect, namely that they would be paid a mere half guilder for each load transported in a common wagon, and half a guilder in Dutch money for a load transported in a small wagon,84 and whatever else might be of more concern, but that this implies without contradiction the same as agreed to by the aforementioned Mr. Commanders Wagenaer and Quaelbergen with their made, namely, that the contract would be entered into with day and no freight wages on the old basis and noticed that it would turn out too excessive and too disadvantageous for the King's Company, also the intention of the majority of the aforementioned citizens seems to be more, in these conjuncture of times, to constrict the Council here with a special advantage to its demands, or to favor the King's Company beyond their detriment. Therefore it is understood by unanimous vote and arrests the said freedom for as yet to be abandoned, and the aforementioned riding through the Company. to have their own wagons and animals taken, and on Monday morning to begin with 4 or 5 wagons, and then to make arrangements to increase the number of wagons, especially since it is still too early to return the plow to the field, and in the meantime, to proceed with good advances, while allowing the free riders to carry whatever wood, reeds, or other items might be necessary, and which had already been partially done by the Holy Roman Company, until such time as the aforementioned Company might deem otherwise advisable.
Thus resolved and arrested in the Fortress of Good Hope on the date and year before.
