On the 2nd of this month, from here in the fatherland, the flute passed Sparendam, and with it E. Robbert Padbrugge, in the capacity of chief merchant, to whom had previously been delegated in respect of this fortress to be allowed to fly the flag of the great stern here, and yesterday there also arrived from Batavia the second dispatch of the return fleet, consisting of the ships Vrijheijt, 't Wapen van der Veer, 't Hoff van Bredaa and the Zuijd Poolsbroeck, all sent off under the flag of skipper Commandeur Pieter Coopman, who since his arrival has likewise requested to continue here in the row with the flag from above, and marked Against all naval customs, they, in a place under equal jurisdiction, as they use. Thus, at the Council of this fortress, where the aforementioned E. Padbrugge is assumed, after careful consideration of the matter, to prevent such disorder,34 it was decided to have skipper Commander Coopman questioned by our fiscal officer whether he had any special commission, and if not, to insinuate that his flag should be lowered until further notice, especially because this morning a French ship with a similar flag was also seen aloft in this fortress.
Thus done and resolved in the Fortress of Good Hope on the day and year aforesaid.
