‘Whereas Mons. Hortie, Commissioner of the French squadron, having arranged under Monseigneur de la Haije, Lieutenant General over the Armaments on land of His Majesty, Governor and his Lieutenant General and Admiral over all the seas and lands in India under His Majesty’s obedience, as if anchoring in the Bay of Saldanhia, by a certain letter139 written and sent by order of Wellgemelte Mons. de la Haije, with the inscription addressed to Cornelis de Cretzer, merchant and second in command here, well specifically to him Cretzer had liked to request, in response on various points in which the aforementioned Mons. de la Haije complained here of having been insulted by the Commander, as well as of the restitution of all such persons, up to ten of them, who had defected to us from the aforementioned bay. Therefore, it was deemed acceptable by the Commander and the Council to answer the same letter by them jointly or collegially, as was also the case according to the same resolution, to that end on the 5th of this month, two persons were sent from here to Saldanha Bay with a certain letter, containing the aforementioned letter not only the requested answer but also a protest in the name of and on behalf of Our Lords Principals, the Directors of the General United Netherlands patented East India Company, concerning the hostilities there in the bay, both to the sergeant and the commander, as well as to the aforesaid soldiers residing there on behalf of Our Lords Principals, as well as to some of our citizens who were fishing there, both to arrest them all together, or otherwise to take possession of the Company's place of residence with armed hand, the Company. to violently remove the flag and coat of arms and to put up a French flag with the King's coat of arms instead of raising it again, all of which is more fully set out in our aforementioned letter.

"And as yesterday morning, some of our citizens, early in the morning, left Saldanha Bay with their ships, understood that they had seen people, as mentioned above, Monsig de la Haeije, with all his accompanying ships, leave this bay a short time after their arrival, and we are concerned that our aforementioned sent persons might have arrived a little too late with the letter, we have considered it advisable and necessary, Monsr. Joije, captain of the ship Vauture Corone, present here in Tafelbay, to assure us, as much as was possible in due time, to have our aforementioned letter read aloud by our Secretary in the presence of two commissioners from the Council, and to have it accompanied by an authentic copy of the same, as well as a copy of the aforementioned letter sent by Mons. Hortie, with the insinuation that it should, if possible, be handed over or sent to Mons. de la Haije, and also to His Excellency. to make our gravamina known, or, if inconvenient, to order it to His Majesty or his high ministers in France,140 adding, in addition to this, not only a presentation but also a special order, that the aforementioned runaways, thirteen in number, taken into custody here at the request of Monseigneur de la Haije, and who are still there, will have to fetch us and take them with them, as we find ourselves extremely embarrassed about this, provided that we are given all due receipts, also leaving an authentic copy of this to the aforementioned Monsr. Joije.’

‘It stood in the Fortress of Goede Hoope on this 10th of October 1670, and was signed by Pieter Hackius, Cornel de Cretzer, Joh. Coon, and Jac. Granat.’

After collation, this translation141 was subscribed to the Council with the French original, and is registered herewith, and found to be in agreement.

[Signed:] H. CRUDOP, Secretary.

‘The foregoing insinuation was made at present to the captains of the ship Vauture Coroné, by the Secretary in the presence of our undersigned commissioners, as well as the letters exchanged between them, having been specifically read; They have thereupon declared themselves willing and prepared to deliver the rehearsed authentic copies, as requested, to their immediate and most suitable hands, to send His Excellency, My Lord de la Haije, at the first and most convenient opportunity, and not to send them to His Royal Majesty or His High Ministers in France, also in case none of their companies would be able to come here to escort them before their departure, to take the thirteen defecting French soldiers (held here in custody) on board their ship together and thus relieve us of them. It stated: In the ship Vauture Coroné of this October 10, 1670, and was signed Corn. de Cretzer and Joh. Coon. The inscription read: "In my presence, signed Hendrick Crudop, Secret." It then read:

"We hereby declare that the aforementioned insinuation was duly made to us, and in addition, the aforementioned authentic copy of the letter, read aloud beforehand, and with it our request, as agreed, was duly delivered, which we promise to do at the first opportunity that will arise to His Excellency." My Lord de la Haije, and if not, to send His Majesty or his high ministers to France, as well as to take over the thirteen French deserters together upon our departure and take them on board. It read: "In the ship Vauture Coroné this 10th of October." And was marked Joijeux and Du Fart. Finally, it continued: "We hereby declare that eleven of the French deserters who deserted (along with two of their companions) have been delivered to us on board, whom we promise to take with us and to deliver to our Lord Superiors upon arrival in Surat." Dated in the ship Vauture Coroné on the 21st of October 1670, and it was signed Joijeux, du Fart and the Guillijn.'
