Aengesien by the encomste of the mountain workers and in particular the four assistants, named Teunis van de Sande, Nicolaes Fredrick Visser, Philip Wints, and Jacob Baseler by Haer Edle. The Lords, Directors, our Superiors, recently sent here by ships, Vrijheijt and Polaenen, from the country to investigate some minerals. We found ourselves unable to find a suitable place for such art and craftwork, and the aforementioned assessors were not willing to satisfy them with our assigned lodgings. As ex auctoritatus and outside our orders, we went to stay with a freeman in the house and dining room, so we left with them from there, who, in turn, retired to their own appropriated dwelling.113 A specification of 211 Rxrs. was shown by the freeman's wife, with the aforementioned four assessors of the From 26 August to 16 November, both this year, they spent their meals there on food, strong drinks, and the food they had enjoyed. Upon closer inspection, we see that this largely comes from copious amounts of strong brandy and Spanish wine, and the aforementioned wife allots for her meal114 and for each man no more than 1/4 of an Rx., including not only the copious amounts of beer they enjoyed all day, which are very expensive here, but also the food and the unavailability of their house, which was completely and continuously occupied by the four of them and the other mountain workers, so that gen. woman could hardly accommodate and accommodate one more person, And the aforesaid Her Honor, in their letter of the 27th of April passado (with the aforementioned ships upon their arrival here), came to order us to add the first two to no more than ƒ28, and the other two ƒ20 per month as a salary besides assistant's expenses, and thus noticed upon careful calculation that this would import for each head in addition to the 18 Rxrs. per month that they had spent there in that short time, that this is quite high and they allow them to be well assured that this will be done by the E. Compe. should have been paid, as we dared to suggest in the meeting,115 therefore we have, after mature consideration, understood and decided to pay the said freeman his specification in full, as he was civilly assessed, but distributed in such a way, namely, that the E. Compe. will pay 111 Rxrs. in deduction of the said 211 Rxrs. in recognition of their board and lodging and allowance for the lodging received, but for drink, noting that the said freeman is an innkeeper, and to write off such drink untaxed at R. for general expenses, and for the remaining 100 Rxrs. each for 1/4 share on recq. to be taxed, and that after this, the first two will receive no more than 6 reale each per month for food and drink, and the other two 4 reale each per month.
Thus we have the merchant Sr. Abraham Zeeuw, who, on April 24th, was brought ashore here by Commander Borghorst of the yacht Amerongen, his second, at his request, agreed in Rade to depart for Batavia with the yacht Noortwijck, which was moored here, primarily because his person was not required here, and his mood also did not seem to accommodate this climate.
Thus done and resolved in Fort de Goede Hoope on the day and year aforesaid.
