Regarding Our Lords Principals, the Directors of the patented Dutch East India Company, at the meeting of the Lords on the 17th, in their letter dated 26 April 38 in the year 1938, and received here most recently by the Beemster, among other things, to order and command us that the Commander and his Councillors here should immediately relieve them of their gardens and livestock, doing the opposite through the East India Company. in order to remain out of embarrassment, the more persevere, however, each one retaining as much of his property as he needs for his own household, and as was proposed and suggested to the E. Commander Jacob Borghorst on the 5th of September before, in Rade, whether it was not a fair and lawful deal, the sheep, wagons and livestock, which His E. had purchased from his predecessor E. Quaelbergh, Lieutenant Schut, and the widow of the preacher Wachtendorp, all for his private use and for a civil price, to the E. Compe, before their departure from here. to do so again in those circumstances, as well as to retain for longer the monthly profits that His E. came to receive from it, on which date it was understood by resolution that Jâ, especially since the E. Compe. in the absence of such large cattle and wagons, having been granted monthly allowances, private wagons were to be employed and used for transporting their fuel wood, brushwood, bales, planks, as well as for transporting stone or earth, whatever the occasion required, so that once the monthly burden would be covered. Also sheep, so that the E. Compe., having a considerable number of such sheep (which are as good as six of the Hottentoes) at hand, and having run them without reduction in a good pasture for two or three years, we would have to try to obtain one of that meager Hottentoe slaughter, which with beds and great expense. will be relieved, and the passing friends will find themselves better satisfied, which sheep, carts, and cattle, as well as those of the aforementioned councilors, in accordance with the aforementioned Her Honorable Men's Order, are then withdrawn from the E. Comp. and are to be paid and reimbursed from the Comp. Cash as follows:

From Mr. Commander Jacob Borghorst.

491 sheep as:

Note, continuing the breeding of the aforementioned sheep, standing at the time that Mr. Borghorst had purchased those from Mr. Quaelbergh: and a total of ...[^39] . sheep, at the disposal of the next Commissioner: 350 pieces of fine ewes, including a ram at ƒ8 each. ƒ2800:-:-
18 ps. fat wethers at 8 guilders ƒ144:-:-
123 pieces of lambs as:
20 of 4 1/2 mt. at 8 guilders ƒ160
103 of 3 1/2 mt. at 6 guilders ƒ608[^41]
123 ƒ778:-:-
491 pieces of sheep, ƒ3722:-:-
3 wagons with 23 oxen, namely:
2 wagons with 16 dozen oxen from Mr. Quaelbergh for: ƒ1000
1 dozen with 7 oxen from Lieutenant Schut for: ƒ450
ƒ1450:-:-

From the fiscal Cretzer.

58 pieces of assorted, selected ewes, 1 ram, a batch of wethers as some lambs, from the others at 8 guilders. 464.

From Ensign Coon.

100 ps. sheep, namely, 50 ps. clean ewes and 50 ps. doves. 8 guilders each: 800.

All these cattle were left to the E. Company for a very reasonable price, as indicated by the councilors, when purchasing their sheep for a good price (which, for a large part, still falls short of the aforementioned number), 45,600, and some even up to 20 guilders per piece. And because pasture on this mainland coast is too scarce to allow this large number to graze fat, we have chosen Dasseneijlant to stock it with cattle for the E. Company instead of the freehold, as the aforementioned sheep there are becoming so fat and heavy that it seems incredible, and the best weigh over 100 lb. in weight, especially since they cannot see what ownership they have of it, yet the fishing and the distillery remain free and open to them alone.

Thus done and resolved in the Fort of Good Hope on the date and year before.
