We also led our yacht, the Voerman, and provisioned it with victuals for six months, to make a trip from here around the easternmost part of this mainland coast of Africa, subsequently investigating suitable harbors, bays, or inlets for ships, not only to be able to shelter them there in time of need, but also to see if there is anything to be done with the inhabitants. Corporal Jeronimus Croese and another 15 men were ordered to go along with us,27 to arrive at Mossel Bay (where he, the corporal, claims to have been ashore last year), to go ashore with the aforementioned 15 men and to explore everything there, attempting to trade and convert the other merchants for animal goods, which he, the corporal, then to bring our state by land with the aforementioned crew, the skipper being advised to call at the bays to Terra de Natal, and having thoroughly examined its constitution as mentioned above, to then change course back this way, and furthermore, as expressed and printed in detail in the instructions (given to them for this voyage).
On the 22nd of the same month.
It was likewise established and decided in Council, after the end of this month, to add no more than 2 ra. per month as food wages to all our laborers, namely carpenters, masons, smiths, etc., but, in accordance with other common soldiers and sailors, 1 1/2 ra. per meter, since our work is now almost complete, they will then be used or sent here again in their original quality. However, after rendering some extraordinary service in this regard, they will provide in return some spoiled jackets, stockings, shoes, etc., which goods (specified below) have been lying around in the warehouses for a long time, and which conscientious reasons may deem inappropriate to provide to the poor soldiers on account, consisting in-
