Yesterday the Commander and some of the Council of this fortress De Goede Hoope went to the ship De Vreede to get some further information about the difficulties and disagreements, etc. there among the chief and principal ship's officers, as well as among others the commissioned councilors of the said fortress Jacob Reijniersz, sub-merchant and second person of this place, and Elbert Cornelisz Kes, skipper of the galiot, the entire officers of the said ship, namely from the chief pilot to the lance pass, including having been asked and required to give evidence whether the skipper Cornelis Noortstrant also generally had been on the voyage in such a way with drunkenness that it was unsuitable or had been beyond his commanded ability to perform his office, and thereupon the said officers were not willing to be answered: but she remained utterly stubborn to give proper testimony about it, even when she was later personally requested to do so by Commander Riebeecq and admonished with sweet and amicable reason that she was obliged to say that His E. and the Council should see to it that the skipper should also be entrusted with the aforementioned ship to go to sea again, etc. So we have looked into the matter a little more closely and considered the difficulties to be feared from one and the other, Also because everyone seems to be arrogant, etc., with unanimous vote of our Council this day we again grant her the aforementioned testimony To requisition, and to commit to this end Elbert Cornelisz Kes, skipper of the Galijot de Roode Vos, 113, and Jan van Hardenbergh, sergeant of this fortress: to deliberate further on the matter, as the majority of the E. Compe. will deem necessary, in accordance with the report received, to preserve the said ship, to quell the troubles that arose, and to restore good order.
Thus done and resolved in the Fort de Goede Hoope on the day and year as above.
