Notwithstanding that, after the report of the chiefs of the garrison, the Red Fox, at 't Dassen and other islands in and around the Bay of Saldanha, the French had caught quite a lot of seals109 and that there still seemed little opportunity to find any more, nevertheless, according to the opinion of the four Frenchmen who had brought along the fresh bay and our experience of the past season110, that at this time of year the old seals give birth to their young, it also happened that the Saldanhas (not wanting to come here out of fear) withheld them in and around the aforementioned bay; and that the French perhaps also left some skins there (which apparently they could not have taken with them). So it was noted by the Council the chiefs of the galley the Red Fox were pleased to be present near the large boat, nicely moored and together prepared for that purpose and ready to sail: and they had also had plenty of fuel and water fetched and taken on board for it, besides provisions etc. for three months for the benefit of 29 diners & others, to give her 112 despesche by Maendagh (which was the day after tomorrow), in addition to ordering the large boat with 14 men to catch seals on the Dassen or other islands, and sailing with the galley of the inhabitants after hearing about the trade in the front bay. taking, and finding her skins from France, for d' E. Compe. to bring here; but in this case we will not find any trade or skins from the French, even with galley straight through the door without having to do this, after the Houtbaijken behind the Taeffelbergh: in order to get a load of coarse fuel to the other calckoven to be made.
Thus done and resolved at the Fort of Good Hope on the date and year as above.
