In view of the fact that Pieter Evrart, vendor and head of this garrison, passed away in the month of March last, we have sorely missed not only an able lieutenant from our Council, but also a faithful overseer and diligent promoter of the fortifications we are currently undertaking, as well as other major construction projects. And because the vacant ensign's post now requires another suitable and vigilant person, who will be able to take all these garrisons and working people (some of whom have already become quite bold and resentful) under his control again and keep them in proper order, it has now been understood and decided in this meeting to appoint for the first time and only by provisional appointment to that office as chief officer the son of Johannes Coon van Somelsdijck, who came from the ship Walcheren, currently moored here, in the capacity of sergeant commander, as being a man who has brought good testimony and the General Company. has also served in India for eight years, provided that before he is proposed to the aforementioned office of ensign, his current sergeant's service will first have to exercise here for two months, in order to be able to further examine his capacity and approach during that time, while the approval and improvement of his salary at Her Ede, to Batavia, will be postponed, or at least postponed, until a commissioner with the expected return fleet from the Indies arrives here this year.

Ten aensien Pieter Evrart, vendrigh en hooft deses guarnisoens, in de maant Meert jongst is comen te overlijden, zijn wij met desselffs doot niet alleen een bequaem lith uijt onsen Raet: maer oock een getrouwe toesiender, en neerstige bevoirderaer van onse onderhanden hebbende Fortificatien als andere swaere bouw-wercken merckelijck comen te missen. Ende om dat die vacante vaendrighsplaets nu weder met een ander bequaem en vigilant perzoon vereijscht gesuppleert, die al dit guarnisoens en arbeijts-volck (waervan sommige al vrij stouth en wrevelmoedigh geworden zijn) weder sal connen onder zijn gesagh nemen, ende in behoorelijcke bant houden, is als nu te desen vergaderinge verstaen en gearresteert om voor eerst en eenelijck bij provisie in dat ampt als hooftofficier te stellen den perzoon van Johannes Coon van Somelsdijck, uijtgecomen met ‘et jegenwoordigh alhier ter rheede leggende schip Walcheren in qualité van zergeant commandeur, als zijnde een man die goet getuijggenis mede gebracht en de Generaele Compe. oock alreede acht jaren in India gedient heeft, mits deselve voor ende aleer tot ‘t voorsz ampt van vaendrigh sal werden voorgestelt zijn tegenwoordige sergiantsbedieningh eerst twee maenden lanck alhier sal hebben t’ excerceren, om in dien tijt nader preuff van desselffs capaciteijt en ommeganck te connen nemen, blijvende de approbatie en verbeteringh van sijn tractement aen Haer Ede. tot Batavia, off ten minsten soo lange uijtgestelt totdat een Commissaris met deses jaers verwachte Indische retourvlothe hier sal verscheenen weesen.
Ende omdat wij oock Jan van Sonnevelt (hier te lande de eerste provisionele keur, eijck, en waag-meester, geweest zijnde) jongst per ‘t schip Outshoorn op sijn ernstigh versoeck (vermits sijn lichamelijcke swackheijt14 als om dat al te ontijdigh en oock all te hoog wouw verbetert wesen) hebben laten na Batavia vertrecken, is insgelijcks bij ons nootsackelijck geacht, dat die drie ledigh gelaten geringe amptjes weder aen soo een ander getrouw perzoon alleen dienen opgeleijt te werden, als hiertoe uijtvinden en bequaem achten sullen.
Aldus gedaen ende geresolveert in ‘t Fort de Goede Hope ten dage ende jare voorsz.
