English translation

The free farmers of this place, when the Council met on other matters, requested permission to appear there, and were granted permission. They explained, with many detailed reasons, that they, as farmers, could derive little or no profit from their cultivation, largely because their servants were so valuable, with a very serious request that they might enjoy a little more for their harvested grains. This, taken into consideration by the Council and carefully considered, was unanimously approved and understood that they would be accommodated somewhat and allocated a little more for their crops, and this by provision and upon approval of the Ede. Gentlemen Majores in the fatherland and this for various reasons, and among others also because what has been delivered to the E. Compe. up to now is very little, indeed above 50 bushels annually, poor and therefore can do little damage or cost the E. Compe.; moreover because that price is also so noticeably lower than the fatherland and Batavian prices, that even with the pieces themselves it is sufficiently clear that they have not been able to get any greasy soup from it, and if at all it comes to the worst, it is only by provision with express declaration to them that the Compe. no longer considers her bound to this if she herself pleases, keeping it up and arranging it for her at all times, as much and as often as she sees fit, and consequently understanding that she would be paid as follows: seven guilders for a bushel of wheat, five guilders and ten stuivers for rye, five guilders and ten stuivers for barley, and four guilders for each bushel of oats.

Furthermore, the following individuals appeared in Rade, requesting continuation of their service after the expiration of their term, and therefore also some improvement, which was granted according to the deeds below:

Pieter van Clinckenbergh of Middelborg arrived here with the fluytje de Meese on April 12, 1658, as a sub-cherurgist at 18 guilders per month, having been elevated to cherurgist with 30 guilders since his arrival here on May 1660. per month, and during that time has held the position of Chief Archergeant of this fortress and has given good satisfaction thereto, is therefore, at his request and aptitude, substituted as Chief Archergeant, with a remuneration of forty-two guilders per month, starting upon the expiration of his exile, and will then be obliged to serve the Holy Roman Empire for three years.

Bastiaen Castiere of Ostend, sailor, landed here with the ship Nagelboom on July 22, 1660, and with ten guilders per month, is, on condition of this, by the expiration of the term and the required competence, requisitioned as a farmer with a remuneration of thirteen guilders per month, for which he is also required to serve the E. Compe. for three consecutive years, banished, and the salary commences on this day.

Thus done and resolved at the Fort of Good Hope on the day and year aforesaid.
