The sub-merchant Jacob Reijniers of Amsterdam, a young man here described as the second person of this fortress de Goede Hoope, having entered into a promise of marriage with the honorable young daughter Elisabet van Opdorp, born in Charloos, niece and under the guardianship of Commander Jan van Riebeecq, and therefore requesting to be allowed to have her and the other legally confirmed in marriage, the Council, having been able to learn nothing other than that both were liberal and free persons, who, according to their own declaration and good testimony, had no standing with anyone in the world in this regard, understood to grant these young men their little request; and to that end, to have their first agreement made tomorrow,100 so that after the publication of the third proclamation and the end of Sunday's Christian exercise or sermon (no legal reason for impediment occurring), the commissioner Fredrick Verburgh, Secretary of our Council, will legally open the council chamber for the same and for all the people, and to conduct the solemnization with all publicity.101
Thus done and resolved in the Fort of Good Hope on the day and year as above.
