English translation
On order received from our most recent Lords Majores, to send out a good number of soldiers. to raise their ships and take them ashore here, as well as to appoint competent chief officers over them. Therefore, first and until further notice, we have had the son of Francois Tullekens, who arrived here on April 27 of this year by the flute from Amsterdam in the capacity of formal salesman, taken into this fortress as a guerrilla, to use him from now on as first commander of this militia. However, since he would have preferred to continue to India rather than remain ashore here, under the pretense that his previous advance on the accompanying recommendations would not arise for him there. Therefore, in that regard, as at his earnest request, we have added to him the quality of lieutenant by provision without increase in salary. by approval of the Lords Masters in the fatherland, or their Honors in Batavia.
In view of the fact that Pieter Evrart van Cruijssart, present sergeant and for quite some time sole commander of the soldiers of this fortress, has requested that, due to the advancement of the envoy Tullekens to provisional lieutenant,226 he might be provisionally permitted to enter the same vacant envoy's office. However, because he was still unable (for special reasons) to grant his request, in addition to his sergeant's office (in consideration of his vigilance and bravery on various occasions), he has also been granted the office of guard of this fortress with an improvement from twenty to twenty-five guilders per month, effective from the date of this month, provided that it remains in force. obligated not only to serve here duly227, but also to faithfully attend the aforementioned lieutenant and adjutant228 from now on.
Thus done and resolved at the Fort of Good Hope on the date and year as above.
