English translation

It has increasingly been experienced that here in Comps. no tall or large fruit trees will be able to grow in gardens anywhere in this Taeffel Valley, and that only a few of the small ones are to be found, such for the E. Compe. is useful, and it is also becoming high time to necessarily choose a good piece of land, and to sort through and clear its wilderness, where the cuttings, not only of the olive trees, but especially those of orange, grapefruit, and lime trees in good numbers around September, together with several young Dutch fruit trees that have taken root, will be able to be cut down and transplanted in order into a large orchard so that, after maturity, the ships can use it in abundance for refreshment, just as the vine shoots, starting in August, are also coming into their season, etc., and afterwards, preparing new land for this purpose will be a very long and costly task, and for such a plantation no better yes, the very best of the entire Caep, particularly situated and freed from the fierce Z.Z. The easterly winds are blowing, the orange, lime and wine plantations of Commander Riebeeck, who are trying to sell them together with the corn farms and everything that is progressing on them, and what is within the understood circle for the E. Compe. best situated under the guardhouse Hout den Buls seen and sufficient preservation is laid, it would also be a great pity and damage if this beautiful young plantation came into the hands of private individuals, who one sees that such useful work would sooner set back than before, as none of the freemen are very inclined to use their land for tree or vineyard plantations, but not for anything other than corn, garden and earth fruits, because they primarily profit from it, in addition to the fact that no one keeps some of the already planted trees and vineyard, the fruits of which, as they have already come so far, as one already notices with the corn itself, will be little inclined to use it for it. The E. Company to deliver, but to try to sell everything to everyone according to their own sensibility, so that the E. Company would never have the power to distribute the fruits of such beautiful oranges, apples and limes as promise to grow there, to the incoming ships in proportion to their crew and sick etc., as has been highly desirable, because of vegetables, earth and various other fruits from the E. Company's gardens of long ago, and therefore it is necessary to make such a large orchard for the E. Company, above and beyond that which is especially to be feared above. Indeed, according to examples, it can be clearly established that the private municipalities. plantation of young oranges and limes, also the vineyards there, planted in good numbers and growing reasonably well, would rather be neglected than promoted, as is evident to this day, inclusive, that hardly anyone of all the plants, especially vineyards, has given their annual supply by the hundreds, a decent stock of vines, neither to their house or on their land; furthermore, it is considered that, as we began to say, a large orange and lime orchard for the E. Compe. for the aforementioned very useful purpose is required, and for the aforementioned reasons will also be necessary, And that to prepare new land for this purpose would entail very great costs and long labor with the eradication of trees and other wilderness, in addition to the fact that this necessary tree plantation would then also come much later to continue, as the Commander's country is currently cleared of all its wildernesses and yet no place on the entire Cape is so suitable for growing large trees as this forest hill, best of all keeping the land free from the strong SE-easterly winds, by which one gains wind here in Comps. gardens, as mentioned above, must keep only very short clusters of trees, of which a hundred will not be able to produce much more fruit than a large tree on the aforementioned forest hill. Therefore, all the aforementioned considerations have been taken by the Council, and the Council considers the aforementioned plantation on the forest hill of the aforementioned Commander for the Reverend Compe necessary and useful in the highest sense and in the service of the Reverend Compe. to take ownership, but for his expenses incurred, the price for the aforementioned land and plantation, as well as the entire structure of barn, mountains,206 wagons, plows, harrows, and other tools207 (at the Commander's suggestion) is understood to be reserved for the assessment and approval of the Honourable Commissioner of Batavia, arriving here annually until the visit in order to remain beyond all doubt, etc., with which it is namely accepted for the Honourable Commissioner, all that has been eradicated from his wilderness and felled by the plow several times, whether sown, planted, planted or unplanted, or fallow land.

Wesende in everything: …208 tomorrow, of which your present …209 tomorrow is spent and growing with wheat and barley, as well as planted more widely and planted with 1162 young orange, lime and grapefruit trees; 10 pisangh; 2 olive trees and 70 Dutch fruit trees, namely: 3 ocher nuts; 6 queen; 5 apple; 2 pears; 11 cars; 24 castanei and 19 plum trees.

Thus making a number of 1244 pieces of young fruit trees in addition to the amount, and several thousand young vine stocks of reasonable quality, a part of which land will also be ready in the near future for early corn harvesting, and the remainder suitable for wine, orange, lime and other young fruit trees, which because of the hard south-easterly winds are attached to the round grove in Comps. small orchard is also not considered advisable to plant anymore, but to keep it as a seedbed, while a place must necessarily be made to plant over 1000 young orange and lime trees by September (which will be rooted), besides the multitude of shoots of the vineyard, for which this land on the forest hill, as mentioned above, is beautifully prepared, the Lords Majores also having in mind the barren, stiff SE-easterly winds in this Taeffel Valley, therefore in their Ed. general letter of September 2, 1658, orders this on behalf of the municipality. Strong winds (even those from vegetable crops) in this Taeffel Valley did not increase or continued, and it was desired that one would go behind the Taeffelberg near the corn fields or elsewhere, where one is not subject to these winds. How much more so for such a useful plantation of oranges, limes and other fruit trees, wine, etc., by the municipality. The Commander, with great care, planted and arranged this further. However, this, after coming out of his hands to private hands, did not progress, but, as predicted, would completely fall into disrepair again, in addition to the fact that the corn or white bean fields there also had to be cultivated in Comps. power and hands will be, which is also of the utmost importance, as one sees more and more that the freemen mostly barter their corn and beans to the people of the passing ships, etc. so that one cannot get a tenth of their corn and beans into the Compe.'s warehouses at all, no matter how closely one takes care of it, as a result of which the E. Compe. remains obliged to fill at least 60 to 70 morgen with grain every year. Noting that on the aforementioned forest hill there is still a little land above what is sown and planted, wildernesses have been eradicated, completely ploughed and left fallow, it is also for the sake of grain that one will still be able to grow anything there in the coming year, but mainly in order to breed olives, as well as the other trees mentioned there, better than in some parts of the Cape, to this resolution is unanimous and also understood all the more because the municipality. tree plantation is a matter for the reasons stated above, and several other important reasons, for the E. Compe, who is of utmost service, being also useful in that country with lots of potatoes (planted) for their growth and construction. there already in good order with two free German hirlings, and the 8 slaves, as well as 22 good oxen, and the was more belonging to itself, standing in the community. Commander at the awards ceremony of d. E' Mr. The Commissioner of Batavia will in the future also devise a complete agreement, together with the Commander, to acquire ownership of the entire remaining 101 morgen of land occupied by him on the aforementioned forest hill, and in addition to the aforementioned sprucing and planting with a covering of wild trees, spruced all around, transporting the same hereby, under the conditions stated above, entirely to the Honourable Commissioner for and on behalf of [them], which this Resolution will serve for the complete transport and commission, as well as the Commander to further agree on the price with the Honourable Commissioner mentioned above.

Thus unanimously resolved and arrested in Fort de Goede Hope on the date and year as above.
