By further letter from my Lords, the Directors at the Amsterdam Chamber, dated November 11, written to us here, noting their Ed.'s continuing order: not to neglect to maintain defensive posture against any eight French ships in the ports of France, well-manned and mounted, as well as victualed for a long time, having been at sea, etc., which Commander Riebeeck also presented to the Council, the aforementioned their Ed. at the Chamber, among other secret matters, as previously discussed in a separate letter dated October 25, 1660. Also, that in order to... To warn ships of the opportunity to be present here outside at sea, she also expressly orders the Hilversum flute to sail alongside the Perkyt galley, etc., and to reinforce the garrison here with 40 to 50 guns until further notice, as well as to lighten as much of the aforementioned flute as it can spare, in order to subsequently exchange its own soldiers for those of other ships. Considering then that the other ships have been away for quite a long time up to now, and perhaps out of fear of the aforementioned France, after the consent given by my Lords the Directors, having chosen another place of refreshment this port this time, we might be excused, and we are therefore frustrated197 not only to strengthen ourselves here as the order of the aforementioned their Ed. well brings along, but that one would thereby also prevent to continue to preserve the beach here (our most necessary work being) not only to repair the old dilapidated redoubt Duijnhoop but also to place another between it and the fort at the reason examined by the Council, and at the highest found as necessary as anything in the world to prevent the landing of canon, without which here little can be done to overcome the Comps fortress even if many people were thrown ashore, that otherwise canon, receiving it for it after some siege, might well be forced to surrender, and thereby this much needed water and refreshment place d'E. Compe. to great embarrassment, as well as this season by the suppression of the secret seas &a. Many ships arriving in this bay are also lost unknowingly.

Thus, given the very high necessity to strengthen the beach, after long and thorough deliberation, it was finally decided, with all the strength and help of the aforementioned Hilversum crew and carpenters. Due to the shortcomings of the crews of other ships present, a good, strong, 20-foot square wooden redoubt was erected on the beach at the designated location between the aforementioned old Duijnhoop redoubt, covered with a cap to prevent it from being forced out by hand grenades, and doubled with padded planks for firing a three-pounder from boats, free of gunfire, as well as two broad ones on the ground below. falling gunports, like those used by ships to fire cannons, etc., as well as, to use the preparedness, placing the timbers of the French cargo close and neatly alongside the works, in accordance with the authorization for the demolition, etc., of her Ed. obtained from Batavia.

And subsequently, the skipper of the aforementioned Hilversum whistle understood this, having had more such work at hand, the municipality accepted. redoubt with its crew and carpenters this week to get almost ready and also says that the Perkyt being at sea for cruising can only observe it there well, in addition to the lookouts that one has here on all sides, which give warning of any ships at sea, at the same time with a sharp rowing chime198 besides that also very well can be brought to know of the situation here, in addition to that it will also give the ships coming off the bay a great deal of reassurance to see a Dutch ship moored here on the roadside, to observe the seas that have been planned for that purpose and with the Perkyt also being at sea. Moreover, considering the seriousness for the Comps. The first and most valuable, principal return fleet, already refreshed, having passed from here, and that the fortifications here are, for the aforementioned reason, to be weighed as essential, it is unanimously agreed that the aforementioned skipper, his crew, and carpenters, arriving ashore in the morning and sailing aboard again in the evening, should immediately start work on the work, and in the meantime, have the whistle observe the seas on the river.

Thus done and resolved at Fort de Goede Hope on the day and year as above.
