And noted by the municipality. in order the journey turned out to be relatively fruitless, which otherwise proved to be an exceptionally good success, since our people were so far away that they saw the fires of the Namaquas, even on their way back. Also spoken of were such people who had not been away for 4 days and who would have been able to join us, if they thought that in 1 or 2 days' journey it would be possible to travel from here in 20 to 25 days at the longest. So it was decided to resume the journey and to use the corporal of the midshipman Pieter Cruythoff Comps as head of the land travelers. The architect, who has given proof of his reluctance and is offering his services to that end, must also carry out the tasks in better order and maintain the required reluctance among the people, in addition to hoping to recover what remained stuck in the previous journey. To which end, the aforementioned Jan Danckart and Meerhoff, under the aforementioned Cruijthoff's observation, also give good hope, and according to that, in addition to this, to seek out the permitted people of their choice, up to a total of 13, in order to be able to travel again first, etc.
And since the aforementioned Pieter Meerhoff has been keeping watch over the sub-curatorial site here for two years now, both here at the fort and outside, and throughout the countryside on expeditions, etc., it is understood that the following deed should be granted to him, namely:
Pieter van Meerhoff from Coppenhagen arrived here on... 1659, March 22nd, with the ship Princes Royael, 9 guilders per soldier, which since its arrival here has been used as a surgeon's surrogate both at the fort and inland, and on various expeditions, etc., and having given proof of his capacity everywhere, a reward of twenty guilders monthly, commencing on this date, was hereby confirmed and added to his request and ability as a surgeon's surrogate, at the first of this month.
Thus done and resolved at the Fort of Good Hope on the date and year as above.
