English translation

By the Commander in the journey most recently made with the Parkitjen to the Saldanhabaij &a. having experienced the particular inconvenient nature of the same bay for passing return ships (a frequent occurrence annually) to come back here temporarily, besides the fact that there is no good water at all to be found there, nor is there the slightest land suitable for planting fruits for any refreshment, etc., and on the other hand, considering the better and very ready opportunities of the islands of Seal and Badger to be able to come up here from there quite quickly, the Council, after consultation of the matter, deemed it highly necessary and entirely expedient, and consequently also approved, first of all to send the Perkytje back to the aforementioned islands, expressly with that order to once again thoroughly investigate the grounds surrounding it and record how and where the returning ships drifting past (which happens most often every year) can best and most conveniently shelter from the strong southerly and south-easterly winds, so that after the strong winds pass, they can set sail with west, south-westerly, and westerly, northerly, and northwesterly airs (often arriving unexpectedly)174 on the cleared weather and quickly arrive in this Table Bay. The substitute skipper Pieter Danielsz Coocker, who had succeeded skipper Isbrant van Bancken, who had departed for Batavia, as well as the second mate Christoffel Handelman, who had succeeded the first mate on the aforementioned galley, had requested the Commander and Council to improve their wages to average quality. Therefore, considering their sufficiency and good remuneration, etc., it was approved to grant them the following deeds:

Pieter Danielsz Coocker, from Bommel, arrived here on July 27th, passing through on the galley Parkyt, for first mate 48 guilders. Monthly, present due to the departure of skipper Isbrant van Bancken, provisional skipper on the same galley, which had been in this position since October 28th, and having been satisfied with his performance, he was absolutely confirmed, at his request and in accordance with the required competence, in the aforementioned skipper's capacity, and, in accordance with the general article of the charter (according to the order of Our Lords Masters), a remuneration of sixty guilders per month per month was added by halving his wages. January coming into effect and remaining bound to serve out his time for this purpose.

Christoffel Handelman from IJburg arrived here on July 27th by passage with the galley "De Parkijt," for second mate at 32 guilders per month, which, since the surrogacy of first mate Pieter Danielsz Coocker to the skipper's place, has been satisfactory, is therefore confirmed at his request and required competence in the average capacity of first mate, and, according to the general article of the contract, a remuneration of forty guilders per month is added to the wages, with a halving of the next New Year, starting next year and remaining obligated to serve out his time for this purpose.

Maerten Jansz van Hoogcaspel from the region arrived here on the 27th of July passing through with the galley De Perkiet for quartermaster at 14 guilders, which was used by the chiefs there for most of the entire voyage as cock and butler, in the person of Jacob Albertsz Camp of Amsterdam (whom she found unsuitable for the purpose and therefore discharged from that place). Thus it is that the aforementioned Maerten Jansz, on the testimony of the said chiefs, in the aforementioned office of cock and butler is hereby confirmed and added a reward of twenty guilders per month, being 1 guilder. more than halving of wages,176 effective October 28, 1660, and remaining bound to serve out his time for that purpose.

Thus done and resolved in the Fort of Good Hope on the day and year as above.
