And so, in response to rumors of a voyage to Monomotapa on the following conditions, it has been revealed that a certain Jan Danckert of Nijnoven has arrived here as a midshipman with the ship Gecroonde Leeuw ano. passo. a good engineer and geometrician: also to be considered a person of somewhat more than a common soldier's capacity to conduct such a land march as head of the group of enthusiasts, which he has allowed us to do until 12 more besides him, namely:
All fine, quick, and courageous men who, out of their own desire and inclination, have offered their services, along with the aforementioned Jan Danckert, for the aforementioned land march, on the following conditions presented to the Danckert community:
That if the land marchers stay half as much longer as the time they can take with them for provisions, their wages will be doubled from the hour of their departure from the fort.
And if they find any fixed locations on the map, to indicate them and to resolve to travel further, their wages from that time (to be noted) will be increased by a fraction, namely, the amount of money they earn to return to the first location, and further to the fort, double the amount mentioned above.
That the cost of gold, stones, pearls, or whatever it may be, should be generously valued during this first voyage, and that it will be paid in cash according to the price of the country, even if it is not so expensive and negotiated or found with them in a civil manner.
Not even above the veneration that everyone will enjoy after the emportance of things that will be discovered.
And especially if they can come to the established places of Monopotapa, Butua, and Davagul on and around the river of Spirito Sancto and bring people from there or thereabouts here, they will be without leaving them there under a few hostages of ours, whom they will always try to bring back by all practicable means, etc.
That the aforementioned Jan Dankaerts will receive double pay during this expedition and be recognized as head of the troops, and that everyone must resolve to endeavor to go as far and stay out as long as possible, as well as to endure such luxury and poverty as the aforementioned head may, over which, should he become unwilling or recalcitrant, he will be able to use such authority as if it were the Commander himself in person. And in order to always have another suitable person as head, which God will forbid, in the event of death, the persons chosen for this purpose are Johannis Dorhaegan, and in the event of death, Pieter Meerhoff, and also Jan Baptist, Theunis Cocq, and George Fredericus, successively or subsequently; And whatever Jan Danckert and the majority of these individuals will come to resolve and approve of, all others will have to comply with and obey, without heeding anyone's opposition (which we do not think we should fear), but instead proceeding with their resolution, as is proper.
And considering that each of the aforementioned individuals not only appears cheerful and calm, but also many of them themselves have requested this expedition on the rumor, and according to that, the above with promises of due obedience, etc. out of my own good will and accept the foregoing offer,
And that My Lord Ryckloff van Goens, as Commissioner by His E. instructions, has also ordered us, among other things, to undertake such expeditions, etc., and that My Lords, on the 17th, from the fatherland by their E., the subsequent letters not only advise us of this but also expressly authorize us,172 for such voyagers according to their value to set premiums.
Thus, after careful deliberation and taking into account the friendships made, mostly with the Hottentoes, it was decided not to delay this notable country, but to allow it to proceed at the earliest opportunity. Furthermore, the aforementioned enthusiasts were to be accommodated with three of the lightest steed horses, thus allowing them to take along much more provisions, as well as to make out a few small mercantile units of various kinds in small quantities.
To this end, and because various kinds of coral have begun to be sought after by the foreign Hottentoes, some of which we have not mentioned here, have appeared at the fort for some time now, it has also been deemed acceptable to purchase from the French some samples of their beads and other trinkets for trading purposes for Madagascar, having seen them for the French Company, if they can be agreed upon.
It is also understood to grant the following persons such amendments and acceptances as are dictated by the following deeds (granted to them accordingly):
Pieter Raderotjes from Ut in the land of Ceulen, arrived here as a freeman on the ship Aernhem on the 16th of March. 1659, with his sister Fijtje Raderotjes, wife of the freeman Jacob Cloeten, who had requested permission to be accepted into Comp's service, and which, since April 16th of last year, had been placed at Comp's barn for inspection, was accepted as a farmer and, because he was known to be involved in agriculture, was granted ten guilders per month, provided he remained connected to the E. Comp, previously bound here to the Cape for ten years, and the salary began at the beginning of April, stating that the barn had served Comp's and had been inspected.
Pieter Mouw van Dantsigh arrived here on the ship Orangien on July 12, 1659, as a midshipman at 10 guilders per month, which he has served as vigilante on various occasions since then. Furthermore, due to the death of Corporal Elias Giers, who is currently vacant, he is hereby confirmed, at his request and aptitude, in the aforementioned corporal's capacity, and is granted a remuneration of fourteen guilders per month, effective October 25, the year the aforementioned corporal began to fill his position, provided he is obligated to serve out his current service.
Thus done and resolved at Fort de Goede Hope, date t ante.
