The Commander of this fortress de Goede Hoope was not provided with any other persons of quality on the land, except for a sargeant and two assistants (being young men), on whom in the event of his absence or death the government could not be trusted with anything of importance, and therefore in such a case to fear that the well-started matters here might fall into disarray, where the E. Compe. no small interest would be incurred, and according to which it is necessary that besides him a person of good conduct and judgment be added, not only for his assistance but especially to maintain the command of this place in good order in case of his absence or death and to perform Compe's business, to take up and subsequently take charge, therefore the Council was strengthened by the skipper and the merchant of the ship Phoenix, given the aptitude and the inclination of the person Jacob Reijniersz, sub-merchant of the said Phoenix, after good consultation for the greatest benefit and peace of mind of the E. Compe. understand to send the same sub-merchant of the said ship ashore for that purpose: to attend Mr. E. van Riebeecq as a second person and in case of his absence or death (God forbid) to take command in his stead at the time and for the time being that otherwise should be ordered from Homeland or India, it is hereby understood that the service of Mr. E. Compe. is of the utmost importance for the peace of mind of this place, especially since matters here have already been brought into good order, in such a way that all Compes. Incoming ships with adequate refreshments (arranged through good diligence) could usually be accommodated, and it would therefore be a pity if, in the aforementioned case, it were lost due to a lack of suitable personnel.
Thus done and resolved in the Fort of Good Hope on the date and year as above.
