Whereas, praise God, the corn bush has advanced so far here that we can all be fed from it, and it has begun to provide the Company's garrison and workers with 40 pounds of freshly baked bread every month, in addition to the board and lodgings, as a ration, which bread is a considerable expense for the Holy Company to bake, besides keeping the more servants there, etc., which has been dispersed for too long, to grant permission for a free bakery. And have therefore offered themselves in freedom to the persons Louijs Ryckhart within and Claes Lamberts van Aelsmeer outside the cock of the Holy Company, which is the first bread for the Company. servants have so far taken and tested with which soldiers may be retained. We have also taken this into account for the Company's benefit. So, after various deliberations, it has been agreed to grant their freedom in this regard and furthermore it has been agreed that for each shipful, be it tare, rye, or both mixed, as the flour of the mill, they will have to deliver to the E. Company 50 lbs. of bread after it has lain overnight and has cooled, without sifting out any flour, and that they will then take for bread such a shipful of corn or 50 lbs. bread will receive nine stuivers in money or 3 lb. fine baked flour at 3 stuivers per pound from the E. Compe. before that date, sent from the fatherland in barrels, at the end of which they could make white bread, biscuits, crackers and other pastries for the convenience of those who wish to live a little more delicately; as well as selling such baked bread, up to 3 pence a pound and finer according to discretion.94

And since the aforementioned Louis is a good pasty baker, roaster, and cook, he and his mate are also permitted, as long as they remain together, to prepare and sell all kinds of baked, roasted, and cooked food for everyone's convenience; and furthermore, if they are consulted in accordance with their letters of freedom, except for tappings, they will not be allowed to interfere in the least, as the two innkeepers at the fort and the small tap of the free fishermen on the southern waterfront are to be provided with sufficient conveniences for the overnight passengers of the ships that pass through.

And since no backers' houses have been built yet, the aforementioned first free backers of the Company are to have a roof and back place outside the fort in the common area, along with a small room adjacent to it, which they are not permitted to use for their own use or for anyone else to have a suitable house and facility made or arranged for them. It is also further permitted that no one, besides themselves (as long as they know how to please everyone), will be able to sell any coarse or white bread, cookies, crackers, or anything else concerning bread bakery, on penalty of the same, and a 20-dollar fine on top of that, 1/3 for themselves (if they catch anyone doing so) and the rest for the pro fisco and the poor, with the understanding that the innkeepers and hostesses or other prepared food, also the housepeople in the country having milk, butter, eggs or otherwise to buy for the passing man, may in addition add some of their own bread for convenience for money as much as they for their food there, as is permitted in more places in rural areas outside the breadbaskets, but not for provisioning for any longer or longer period, nor for carrying away and bringing aboard, which the aforementioned free breadbaskets remain permitted on the aforementioned condition, in order to ensure that no fraud by others occurs in the weight of the bread, nor that the common man of the arriving ships (as unskilled) is treated too lightly. The tax authorities will be instructed to take note of this and to have an extract regarding this issued and issued in the usual places, so that everyone remains aware to guard against damages.

And with regard to the persons Willem Pietersz van Nimmegen, Michiel Bartholomeus van Swol and Dirck Cornelisz Jonge Nooteboom97 (pmo. October last year for committed sheep theft & a.o. condemned to a banishment of 5 or 6 years) have behaved very well since then on all occasions and especially during the Hottentoes war. It has therefore also been approved to release them from the aforementioned banishment and to set them free again: namely Michiel Bartholomeus and Dirck Cornelisz Jonge Nooteboom: to employ them here at the Cape as free carpenters and to employ Willem Pietersz in Comps. at his previous salary of 10 guilders. to use the land per month, provided that free carpenters from now on and Willem Pietersz 6 years 98 will continue to live at the Caep, understanding that after the new year they will continue to live as if

The aforementioned Willem Pietersen's salary will also be taken into account.

Thus done and resolved in the Fort of Good Hope on the date and year as above.
