EXTRACT FROM THE GENERAL LETTER OF ARTICLES.
Article 108.
All military officers and soldiers, as well as, if necessary, all others in the service of the Company. Those (without exception) will be obligated both for their own protection and protection and for the service of the Most High Lords, the States General, and the Company, at the behest of the Governor General and the Council of State, as well as of all other authorities and commanders appointed over them, to labor in the construction and repair of forts, batteries, and fortifications or other works, without receiving more than their stipulated wages for the time of their work.
"Furthermore, some began yesterday to oppose this article and thus refused their due service to the E. Company. So it is with the Commander. and the Council has approved of publishing and publicly displaying the same article to the same people and to all others,50 with the express instruction and command that everyone should subsequently regulate themselves on the penalty of being punished, as is customary with such disobedient guests, namely those who allow themselves to be seduced, with expulsion from the militia, and the rioters, both physically and physically, after attending to the matter.51
Thus done and published in the Fort of Good Hope and also displayed everywhere outside it among the working people on this 19th of August 1659, and also displayed everywhere on the same day.
